So we just got a contract on new construction. We have to get everything pretty low on the options thing, formica laminates, vinyl flooring, plywood cabinets. Its going to be pretty awful for awhile

I plan on redoing the floors and countertops myself, but I was hoping that the cabinets would at least be fine, and now they aren't either. I really wanted white, and the only options are veneered wood. Just sucks, I feel like its a waste of money and I wish we could just get the kitchen unfinished and do it ourselves, or at least pay a little extra out of pocket and upgrade, but its just not an option. Ugh. Just needed to vent, I kinda wanted to be able to live with everything for awhile before I start with any upgrading and it looks like its not going to happen. The kitchen is pretty small, so even a semi-decent looking faux dark wood isn't an option because it would shrink the room.
Re: frustrated vent :)
I'm sorry, that does sound frustrating, but it seems like you have a good plan in place.
I suppose if you take the cabinets and counter tops out carefully when you are ready to upgrade you can try to sell them on craigslist, at least then you might be able to recoup some of the money spent on them.
They should still be useable. People look on craigslist all the time for cabinets for camps, or apartments they're remodeling, or just the average home owner who has really old cabinets that don't function well.
I think you'd be able to sell them really easily.
