okay, every four years the ENTIRE international united methodist church holds a huge conference to discuss the future of the church, business stuff, clergy stuff etc. it is also where church laws are made/changed. every general conference for almost 40 years has included a debate about homosexuality.
today, the presiding bishop had to close the conference and stop the live feed because a group of protesters (mostly clergy) marched in and held a communion service and prayed and sang songs right in the middle of the conference in an effort to show how the exclusion of the LGBT community negatively impacts the whole church. protests like this happen the entire 2 weeks. usually it's outside the doors or along the side walls, but this was smack in the middle of the conference.
i love it
Re: wciiy: PIP gay rights protesters at methodist general conference
I had the honor to be a part of the similar movement that presented at the Presbyterian church's general assemblies in 2004 and 2008. It was a really moving experience--particularly when a couple of years later, the GA moved toward ordination of lgbt clergy.
Sweet.
Does it have any effect/do they consider a change?
