DH finally said yes to home gym!

I've been given use of one of his garages (out of the 5 total he now has...) to turn into a home gym!

We already have a stationary bike, an exercise ball, medicine ball, and some other random things thrown in there.

I need some equipment ideas from anyone out there that has a home gym set up. We won't be purchasing any other cardio equipment, so we're strictly looking at weight equipment set ups. With purchasing weights, our only issue is DH lifts much heavier weights than I will ever lift. So, we'll basically need two completely different sets...which seems like it'll be a lot of $$

On the plan right now is some sort of platform, bench, and weights (dumbbells and plates). Perhaps a couple more medicine balls, and some kettlebells? We have an extra TV we'll be trying to put up soon, so we'll need a little bit of open space for any work out DVD's we'd  like to do.

Any other suggestions? thoughts? experience?

Thanks!

Re: DH finally said yes to home gym!

  • We have a home gym for strength training.  We have a universal Body Solid set-up.  It has light enough weights for me and heavy enough weights for DH.  You can even buy an extra weight stack if you need it.  We of course have a wide range of dumbbells.  From 10-30lbs each and then a set of the kind where you can change the plates out to get up to about 120lbs.  I think the gym itself was about $600 plus another $200 for a bench and then we've just acquired the dumbbells along the way.

  • A pull up area would be a must for us alone with rings so we're eyeing something like this:

We are making our own plyo box & paralette bars. You can even make your own medicine ball with an old basketball & sand.
