s/o 50 Shades stupidity

I have made an observation.  I see a lot of posts on FB regarding these books and I noticed that those who love them and can't seem to put them down are married, stay at home mom types. Makes you wonder. I have even seen people say they increased their sex life.   I guess whatever works for you.  Any of my single friends who have read them, can see them for what they are - stupid.

Re: s/o 50 Shades stupidity

  • To me it's not just that they are stupid it's that the writing was horrendous!  I didn't even get to the sex part because it was so bad.
  • Im single and not a stay at home mom, and I enjoy them.  I think to each their own.  Yes, the writing is kinda crappy...but not every book needs to be written to win a Pulitzer...some are just meant to entertain.

Oh I completely agree.  I'm sure there are some single, non moms who really do enjoy them. I'm currently reading the second book which puts me to sleep to be honest with you.  I usually read chick-lit anyway.  I tend not to read anything too serious or heavy.  I was just making an observation amongst my FB friends.

lol, if you think they are stupid why are you reading the second one?

  • I have decided not to read them. I have heard mixed reviews about them and have just decided that I am not going to read them. Got other stuff to read.

I KNOW!  Almost done with it. I won't be getting the 3rd one.  I guess I was just hoping for more.  I may read the 3rd one once they are able to be loaned through the kindle but I may forget about it by then.

  • I'm really curious about what is so "hot" about these books. I'm not interested in reading them, but I'm totes interested in what is happening in these sex scenes that is getting so many people all riled up. Anyone care to summarize?

That how I feel. I keep reading because I keep thinking it will get better and there will be a plot!

I didn't think it was hot at all.

-Awkward virgin gets off a million times with this guy's "impressive member."

-He's into dom/sub relationships.  Has dungeon.  She calls it "Red Room of Pain."

-He spanks her, and she feels abused.  Then she realizes she liked it.  More spankings and other very light forms of BDSM play are occasionally present.

    -They fall in lurve.

    Dude.  It's poor.  Piss poor.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

I still don't get why it takes 3 books for this to happen....why???? Maybe this is why I want to read it. Because I just don't understand...

  • This all happens in the first book, which I struggled to finish.  I have no interest in finding out what happens next.

I think you mentioned in another post that you have read some good books in this genre, care to suggest some alternatives?

  • Sure thing!

If you think you want BDSM stuff, try The Story of O.  It's pretty intense.  Brutal, even.  But it's very well known, and shows exactly how light 50 Shades is.  Macho Sluts is also pretty brutal, if you want some lesbian BDSM stories.

On the more literary/less porn-y side, a novel called Tipping the Velvet is really sexy.

The thing about erotica is, just like with porn, people have different tastes.  That's why I definitely recommend picking up anthologies of short stories.  They have a ton of those, and you can choose whether you want the collection to be more or less fetishy, etc.  Some of the stories will leave you cold and will suck, but you'll also find authors who you really like, and can then pursue their work.

    Hope that helps a bit!

I love to read and will probably read this just to see what all the talk is about. Even if it is bad. I was going to ask this very question to you GOZ.

Oh and the way she is described and he is described - it is so unrealistic that he would ever be interested in her.  And the clothing she wears (that I picture her wearing), is something out of 1992 and completely too old for a recent college grad.

This sounds so not hot. Like a really bad version of The Secretary (which I do btw actually find pretty hot).
