Curly Hair Chronicles

I've had curly hair my whole life (3b for anyone who is on the curly girl chat boards and knows what I'm talking about). I've struggled with my hair my whole life.

Recently I've noticed my hair isn't as curly...it started when I used Wen. I stopped and it got better, but now with the weather change, it's gotten bad again. Trying a new hair dresser for my quarterly DEVA cut didn't help b/c she butchered my hair....luckily my hair grows fast and seems to be recovering.

I was googling last night and found advice about how to "bring your curl" back so to speak. I ordered two new products last night (using curl mart, which I've never used before). I got:

AG Hair Cosmetics Mousse gel  (this was specifically rec'd for my problem)

& Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper (b/c it was $9 and something I've been wanting to try anyway)

If only my hair would look perfectly straight or wavy naturally - I don't have more than 5 - 10 minutes to do my hair in the morning.

The stresses of having curly hair :)  If anyone is interested, I'll report back on my progress. Diffusing my hair this morning also helped (I normally clip and let it air dry 90% of the way). I'm really trying to avoid one of those Keratin treatments...that & I love curls :)

Re: Curly Hair Chronicles

  • Let me know how it goes! The top of my hair is 1 and my "underneath" hair is 2b. I'd love to get 2b all around.

Also, do you think your hair might be getting too long? I know you said you just cut it, but maybe it was still too long. I know the longer it is, the more it gets weighed down/less curly.

  • I definitely am interested to hear how it works out! I'm always searching for new products and the IT product for curly hair. I have to change up products every season or so because my hair seems to get dull with the same thing over and over again. My hair became less curly for more than a year after I had my son. Right now I have the best luck with scrunching with a mousse right after shower, plop it in an old t and let dry then diffuse to dry the rest of the way.

It's not even shoulder length, so I don't think that is the issue...but I am trying to grow it out (just enough) so I can pull it back again...I miss my messy curly bun look. I will likely get a trim next month again...haircuts don't scare me and my hair NEEDS trims.

Right now I do the low poo/no poo thing and silicone free products (DEVA for shampoo and conditioner). I swear by those products, but not their styling products so much except the Set it Free spray.

I also love plopping but I wonder if it doesn't work as well for me b/c I have shorter hair?

  • I'd love to hear your progress too! I have similar hair that is frizzy in places and not consistently curly. I straighten most of the time, but come summer/humidity my hair takes on a mind of its own.

I know plopping works for others, but it isn't the miracle method for me. I find that putting in product, piling hair on head, and then covering in a shower cap while I do my makeup is the best bet. It sorta lets things stew a bit, haha. Then I diffuse. When I plop, its like all the product gets sucked up by the t-shirt/towel/etc, which seems not only wasteful, but also lends to uneven curl and more frizzy than I would like.

  • I've never tried the DEVA products. I shampoo with Organix, it seems to work pretty well. I should invest more time in researching curly products. I tried the curly girl boards but got confused and haven't attempted it since. That was about the same time that I realized a lot of my curl had disappeared after giving birth and I was trying to find a miracle worker to bring it back! haha. Luckily time did just that..

  • I'd love to hear your update.  I am a 2B/2C/3A depending on which part of my head you're looking at!  I've been sulfate/silicone free for about a year and I did notice that my hair has gotten a little curlier.  I wash about every 3-4 days and I do blow it out still every other week or so using Phyto's Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm (which I love).
