Where to find cheap floating shelves.

Looking for something like the pic below but don't want to spend a ton nor do I need anything giant.  I'm going to stop by Home Depot on the way home and see what they have.

Re: Where to find cheap floating shelves.

  • Whatever you do DO NOT buy them from Target.  We recently installed the brackets for 6 floating shelves from Target on our newly painted living room wall- they ended up being craptastic (and we had to dig 20 anchors/screws out of my wall and repaint).  The brackets weren't strong enough to hold the shelves and they kept falling off the wall.  Not to mention they were cheaply made and every time they fell they got pretty severly dented up.  We ended up returning them.

DO buy floating shelves from Ikea!  They were much cheaper than the Target ones, are much, much sturdier and I LOVE them!

Oh no, what a mess.  Guess I'll be heading to Ikea this weekend.  When I looked on Ikeas website theirs looked quite a bit longer than we needed but it's worth a trip.  Plus they had some cute brackets.

Also, it's worth noting that I noticed the prices on some of their shelves was cheaper in store than it was online.  The longest ones we bought were $14.99 and the short ones we bought (about 12") were $6.99.  The short ones don't come with screws/anchors but DH found some sufficient ones at Menards easily enough :-)

  • Thanks for posting!  I have been on the lookout for new ones.  I also just had a similar issue with ones from target.  And thanks to some giant holes in the dry wall, I have to reconfigure all my wall decor.  I just wish I had an Ikea close by...
  • I got some unfinished floating shelves from Micheal's for super cheap (used their 40% coupon).  I stained them espesso since our furniture is that color and they turned out beautiful.  Super sturdy and cute.

  • The Lack shelves at IKEA come in different lengths, so you should be able to find shorter ones.

  • with floating shelves I think you get what you pay for with the exception of the Ikea ones, which are great quality.

we have floating shelves in our living room from C&B which I love.  They were on sale so I got 2 for $70 I believe, they are 3 foot long.  I also got some white ones from West Elm for the nursery that were a little more than that I think, but I used a coupon.

target ones or the ones you see at JCP/Kohls, etc are all crap, do not buy.

That sucks. We love ours! We have moved them several times and they are super sturdy.

  • We made our own using the Ana white instructions I love them, we could customize our length and we stained ours with a rustic appearance. For 2 36 in long shelves we spent $25

  • I love the LACK shelves from IKEA. We've had all different lengths over the years, and in just about all the colors. :) Very easy to hang, and they're extremely sturdy.

Thanks for the suggestion! I found this link on how to make Ana's custom shelves (similar to IKEA's). I think I'll try this for our bathrooms as I need more of a custom size:

  • Wait a minute, you think Ikea is a step UP? HaHAHAHAHAH
