Baby's first cocktail party...
...and by "baby" I mean me, because it's not that kind of household.
Lurker coming out of hiding to ask...I bartend and do some amateur, hobbyist mixology, so it was really just a matter of time until I wanted to throw a cocktail party. Just looking for some fun theme ideas, cocktails I may not know about, food ideas, really anything that comes to mind.
My husband is gunning for a "Mad Men" theme, which I'm all for, but another friend has one of these parties every week when the show airs...so I'd love to do something different!

Re: Baby's first cocktail party...
I am a huge pot-luck fan.
If you get everyone to bring something small to share it reduces the workload on you, gives everyone a conversation starter and makes it more fun when people can contribute.
Get a small cocktail recipe book, put out all your shakers and mixes on the table and let people make their own. It will cost lots up front for all the booze but really it should last a long time.
While I always offer to bring something when I am invited, I think it's terribly rude to invite someone over for an event and then request that they bring something. If you are hosting a party, then you should do just that, host. If guests ask what they can bring, that's a different story. Just my two cents.
In regard to a theme, I think cocktail party is one in itself. I picture upscale appetizers and small plate types of food and dessert. Simple, elegant, classy. Consider 2 to 3 "signature cocktails" and either mix to order, or, if you don't want to be behind the bar all night, pre-mix them or put out ingredients and instructions to have your guests mix their own.
A Mad Men them would have been great, but I can understand not wanting to do that if someone else has had one (especially with it being a weekly occurence).
How about a Great Gatsby-themed party?
You could do an old hollywood glam theme and put out pictures from old movies.
Ooh, I LOVE that idea...and the Great Gatsby one. Some of my friends are in a vaudeville troupe so that might work out nicely!
