NDR-related: Parents - cost of overnight babysitter

I babysit on nights and weekends and was asked to overnight babysit for one of my families. The kids are elementary school age and pretty self sufficient (though I will be making all of the meals, etc.) The parents will be gone for about 24 hours (from early afternoon to afternoon). I usually charge $10 an hour, regardless of the number of kids or time of babysitting, but I know that $240 would be a ridiculous amount to charge.

So, any idea what a reasonable flat fee would be in this situation? Should I just email back and ask what she had in mind?

  • I've done that a few times for relatives - they each paid $300 for about 3 nights. I think at least $100 would be reasonable as a flat fee, and it looks like you're in a higher col than me.

  • I'd say $200 is totally fair. $10 an hour is already a pretty good rate. I used to charge $15 (in NYC).

I'm jealous of your $15 an hour and currently seeing the extra pairs of shoes I could buy if I upped my rate.

Thank you for the advice! I was really lost as to what to charge.

My girls are 3 and 9 and I would expect to pay around $200 for an overnight babysitter.
  • Could you do 8 hours (sleep time) at half-price, since you are sleeping but technically on duty in case of emergency.

I am also interested in what you would charge for a weekend or several day gig.

Does the price ge "cheaper-by-the-dozen", so to speak.  In other words, the longer you stay does the price get cheaper?
