I recently rescued a 3 year old Beagle named Mia.  She's the cutest thing ever! For the most part she's well behaved but the OTHER part is she loves to do her business inside the house. I haven't been able to put her into any training classes because she had kennel cough when I rescued her and after many many vet bills, she just received the clean bill of health.  This weekend I will be search for a good training class that we will all enjoy.  Anyone have any tips to train my little monster at home?

Re: Hi everyone!!

  • Check out the training and behavior tab in the Pets Board FAQ (at top of board or link in my sig). There is a lot of good info and links in there to get you started.

If you're looking for a book, Pat Miller and Karen Pryor have some good books on the how-tos of positive training. You can't go wrong with either of them. I also love Patricia McConnell's books, although they're more informational and less of a how-to.

As for the housetraining issue, see the links on "new puppies" and "crate training" in the FAQ. Even though your dog is an adult, starting her back on potty training 101 same as a puppy is the best way to get her back on track.

  • It took us awhile to potty train one of our beagle mixes.  We used the tether method and let him out every few hours, then threw a little party with happy voices when he went outside and immediately gave him a treat.  He decided going outside and getting a treat was infinitely better than going inside.

For a beagle I would highly recommend positive reinforcement training and NILF.  If you have other members of your household both go to the doggie classes.  DH and I went to all of Darwin's classes together and he was the only dog with two people  :  )  Beagles are very eager to please but can also be pretty stubborn so consistency and positive reinforcement are key.  We have made more progress with him than I ever thought possible just by being very very consistent with our expectations and our reactions to positive and negative behavior.
