I love free perennials

I visited my friend yesterday and she and I divided some of her perennials and I brought home three boxes of hostas, daylilies, irises, lily of the valley and solomon's seal.

I just finished planting everything, and can't wait for the garden to get fuller.

  • That is awesome.

I wish I knew more about landscaping design and how to lay out my lot. I would like more perennials but can't figure out where to put them.

    I love free anything.

I really need to get to work on the beds in my front yard. I tried some perennials last year that didn't survive the winter. My (free!) hostas are thriving though, so I might just get some more of those. It's apparently too shaded for much of anything else to grow.

  • my backyard is full on shade, so all of these are going to be awesome.  I also have had great luck with bleeding heart, ferns and sedum back there.  It's all very woodland-esque

Out front the first year we moved in we went to a Garden Centre closeout and for 10$ got as much as we could take home.  I ended up finding some things i might never have bought but have worked amazing in our gardens.

Cat mint, hardy geraniums and periwinkle grow like crazy out front for me.  Then bulbs (crocus, tulips and daffodils).

Once I knew what took in the space, and which required zero work I was off to the races.

  • A couple of years ago my mom had some hostas in a plastic bag lined boxed waiting to be planted the next day.  There were lots of them.  She couldn't believe it when she went out the next day to plant them and saw that SOMEONE TOOK THEM!  Every last one! They live in a nice neighborhood and it was quite obvious they were NOT free for the taking!  Who steals hostas!?   Lame.

I'm taking note of a few of those. I love bleeding hearts - I might add some of those for color.

Then I just have to figure out how to arrange everything in the bed so it doesn't look like a sh!tty mess.

  • Does your city have any garden advisors?

We have a local program for water conservation that employs landscape designers to come and give free consultations, and design help.  It's wicked.  They focus on planting to minimize water use, but can help plan your design for focus, balance and clarity too.  Best use of my tax dollars ever.

  • I would love to have awesome flowers but I'm lazy about taking care of stuff and I kill anything that isn't a hosta or lily.

  • I'm jealous you can plant now.  It's still getting down in the 20's at night.  I'm planning on buying my bedding plants on Wednesday so I can start hardening them off.
