s/o poll - pot vs alcohol

MH and I had a discussion a few weeks ago about whether we would rather our son smoke pot as a high schooler or drink alcohol.  It was an interesting talk.  WDYT?

Re: s/o poll - pot vs alcohol

  • I picked pot, but only because it's illegal.  If both were legal, I'd say alcohol was worse.
The day I left was just my beginning.
  • Are you talking about like 17yo? Because in that case, I expect them to be doing both...

i had a reading comprehension fail and accidentally voted for pot.. b/c i thought we were voting about what we would RATHER find our kid doing.

i would rather them smoke than drink... for sure.

I agree.  Clearly, I'd rather him not be doing either, but I feel like there are fewer dangers with pot than with alcohol

That is tricky. I've seen more adults who are stupid because of using too much pot than from alcohol. But alcohol takes its own toll.

I figured he's be more likely to drink himself to death than to smoke himself to death.  Especially since HSers are likely drinking to get shitfaced.

I did the exact same thing.  I would personally rather come home and find him laying on the ground watching cartoons and laughing like a maniac then throwing up on my front steps.

I think I'd prefer weed. I never heard of a kid in my high school dying b/c of weed. However, I remember quite a handful that died b/c they were drinking/driving/binge drinking.

And I don't think weed makes you lazy. I have quite a few professional clients that partake and they make more money in a month than we do all year, lol.

I voted wrong too. Lol that pot might win because people effed up the voting.

  • I, too, voted wrong.

  • I acted much dumber and am more embarrassed by what I have done drunk than by what I've done while high.

I just think kids are much more dangerous to themselves and others while drunk.

     ETA: adults too.

  • Hand up for voting wrong. I'd like to see the stats on how many people who voted incorrectly are smoking the wheezy.

  • I voted, but I feel like a special snowflake.

I would rather my teen be involved in occasional pot than occasional alcohol, but I would also rather they not smoke it. I mean, they could bake it into a brownie and eat it or something for the sake of their lungs.

    *blush*

    I voted wrong, too.

I haven't had the chance to partake for several months, so I have no excuse.

My answer would be different if I lived outside of CA, though.  I think cops are more likely to bust my hypothetical child for drinking and doing something really dumb while drunk than for the simple act of smoking pot.  I see people passing doobs in downtown SF (and not in the park or other inconspicuous locations).
