Travel to St. Louis

H and I are planning a 3 day weekend in St. Louis.  Neither of us have ever been?  Must sees?  Restaurants?  Places to stay?

Re: Travel to St. Louis

  • When I visited there I really wanted to go up inside the Arch.  It's pretty cool.

Their zoo is very nice, and it's free.

  • City Museum http://www.citymuseum.org/site/ -- not your typical museum --dress comfy!

Restaurants: Niche http://nichestlouis.com/  -- james beard finalist

    Farmhaus-- http://farmhausrestaurant.com/

  • The Arch (and the Jefferson Nat'l Expansion Museum is underneath...pretty cool)

    Grant's Farm (http://www.grantsfarm.com/)

    Cahokia Mounds (http://cahokiamounds.org/)

    Anheuser-Busch Brewery for tours

If you are beer drinkers - Schlafly Bottleworks and Tap Room (two seperate locations) and Chestnut Brewing are smaller breweries

    Busch Stadium Tours

I've heard a good burger place is Bailey's Range (http://www.baileysrange.com/)

One of my favorites is the Dubliner (Irish pub and food http://www.dublinerstl.com/)

The Fatted Calf (more burgers I think) (http://www.fattedcalfburgers.com/)

    The Shaved Duck (http://www.theshavedduck.com/)

Drunken Fish (http://www.drunkenfish.com/#home)...I am seeing a pattern here

Mike Shannon's is a steakhouse...he's the announcer for the STL Cardinals.  Never been, but heard it's good.

    Gios (http://www.giosdowntown.com/)

There is a nightlife/bar hopping area called "The Landing"...

My favorite place to stay is the Hyatt at the Arch (http://www.stlouisarch.hyatt.com/) simply because they have a really awesome lobby bar.  LOL.

  • When are you going and what are you into?  Up for a "higher end" restaurant?  Museums?  Zoo?  Bars and clubs?

  • If you're over 30, skip the Landing.  It's a younger crowd for the most part.

If you go to Grant's Farm, get there early or else you will waste time standing in line.  You get two free AB beers of your choice when you're there.  :)

The St. Louis Zoo is a must.  It's a wonderful zoo.

If it's nice weather and you want to drink/eat outside, go to the Central West End.  http://www.thecwe.com/  Bar Italia is my choice.

A Cardinals baseball game is always a good time.

What area are you staying in?  Closer to downtown?

We're fairly open.  We will do the arch and then museums, zoo and restaurants are all good.  Bars we're not so much.  It's a non-baseball weekend, so that's not part of the plan.

  • They do Segway tours downtown?  Whaaaa?  One of my favorite areas of the city to just walk around and shop is the Delmar Loop.  Google it.  They have a great hotel there called the Moonrise if you don't have a hotel yet.  And yes, I love our zoo.  And it's free.  we have a really nice art museum and history museum in Forest Park.  For great brunch downtown go to Rooster.  My current favorite higher end restaurants are Brasserie (in the Central West End neighborhood someone mentioned earlier) and Farmhaus.  The place is tiny and tucked away in a small neighborhood, but the food is to die for.  You'll want a reservation for either of those places.  If you want some amazing deep dish pizza (not quite Chicago style though) you have to go to Black Thorn Pub (or it's counterpart dive bar, Lemmon's).  Most people here are also fairly obsessed with Pi for pizza.  There are a couple of locations, including one in the Delmar Loop.  If you like Vietnamese food we've got some great places, like Lemongrass and Pho Grand.
