s/o tanning mom. wdyt about "tanorexia?"
i saw a dermatologist on gma this morning throwing this word around like it was an actual diagnosis. i agree that addictive behavior can lead to excessive tanning, but using it like it's an actual medical term kinda bugs me

Re: s/o tanning mom. wdyt about "tanorexia?"
I think that it could become an actual term for people who never feel "tan enough" kind of like anorexic people never think they're "skinny enough"
I will admit to occasionally going to the tanning bed (i know, ML is against this) but I would NEVER want to be as tan as that craaaazy tanning bed mom. so, I assume she would be someone who would have "tanorexia" and I would not.
I don't like it.
Don't try to combine medical conditions in a cutesy way and then refer to it as an actual medical condition.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and used against you. My Blog
I think they probably use it because they have nothing better to call it. If I were going to coin a phrase it would be something like "tannaholic" or something like that to link it more to an addictive behavior.
I think the NJ mom has more of an issue of dysmorphia, where she really does not see herself like everyone else does and that is really scary.
Are you going to watch Dr. P today? From what I have seen in the previews, the mom does not sound very believable.
I think it's a dumb name. The suffix "orexia" refers to the physical appetite, not a mental addiction. It's a TANNING ADDICTION. Probably stemming from low self-esteem.

This is what I was thinking too. I just don't think she's actually aware of how gross she looks.
Honestly, it's sad. Like the people who keep getting plastic surgery until they start to look ridiculous.
There's actually evidence that the endorphin release (serotonin, dopamine) during skin exposure to UV rays can lead to chemical dependence in some people. i.e. if you miss a tanning appointment, you feel like crap and crave a visit to the salon.
edit: to clarify, this is not to say I support that ridiculous name, or that everyone who tans has a neurochemical excuse for doing so.
I think the idea is half baked.
Tanners are my smokers. lol. Some people go, "Smokers, ew!". I do that about people who tan.
