Walk-in closet storage

I am moving into a 2 bedroom apartment with my boyfirend in a couple of weeks, let me tell you this place is lacking in areas for storage....I think we have 2 1/2 closets in the entire unit. Other than that this place is perfect. I am trying to declutter my life... This is harder than expected.. 26 years of build up.... OH MAN O MAN- Thankfully we will be having a garage sale shortly after we move.

I have been searching on every site imaginable, for some awesome ideas for extra storage in the walk-in closet, i am going to be installing shoe racks on both sides, One for him and one for me. Also, we are planning to have racks installed for my jewlery and his watches (and by installed, I mean my handy man of a father!)

We are going to be decorating the second bedroom as an office (How crazy is that, this room does not have a closest! Obviously a man designed this building!!!) So I was planing on doing book shelfs with the fabiric bins for additional storage but everytime ive used these in the past junk just piles up in them and they look messy.... Does any one have any suggestions! Im so excited to be starting this new journey but freaking out bc the lack of space! HELP PLEASE! Big Smile

Re: Walk-in closet storage

  • Well, aside from getting rid of clothing and shoes you don't use, you could also buy those under bed roller bins for stuff. You could put shelves all the way up to the closets' ceilings. Put your rarely used items or luggage up there. If the doors aren't bi-fold or on sliders, you could do over the door storage racks. Lastly, I have had moderate success with those vacuum bags - it's a crap shoot, though. Some of them hold their seals and others (maybe even from the same pack) aren't airtight and they leak. I think I have 20 of them in all sizes and probably 6 leak.
  • I love the under the bed storage containers and also the larger ones so you can stack them neatly. Also the back of door for storage is good too. We have lived in several apartments and I always feel like my kitchen is a mess I have some many gadgets....usually half the stuff ends up in the laundry room or other closets. Also for us we have a lot of coats and if you don't have a coat closet that takes up a lot of space so remember to factor those in if they apply. I think the best recommendation if get rid of things you don't use or need. I don't know if this an options but we have things we don't use often but don't want to throw out maybe you could rent a storage unit for those items....we store them in my parents basement. Things like holiday decor, etc.

  • Well unfortunately the under the bed storage is out..The bed we have is very low to the ground. He recently bought it from Ikea... As well as being a california king... it seems to be causing me more headaches than anything! As for our "laundry room" I'm pretty sure they stuck a full size stackable washer and dryer in what was supposed to be the pantry! But I wanted the washer and dryer, I will have to live with that. The over the door storage for the close is actually a really great idea I hadn't thought of, I could use that in the walk in as well as the "coat" closet in the foyer.. Thanks for the ideas! Keep em coming if you have any more!!! it is greatly appreciated..

  • I have 2 of these and I find they help me fit more stuff:

I have hanging things like that too in my daughters closet and they are great. Ikea has amazing wardrobes that you can customize with shelving - might be an option for the office since there's no closet. We had one at our old place and it held TONS. Even if you don't put stuff under the bed, the under bed containers are great for the bottom of the closet.

As for shelving - A big cube bookshelf works well with lots of bins. IKEA and Target have good options. The bins fit a lot of stuff.

  • Thanks so much for the options! I have been writing them down...Sadly now is when the downsizing starts! OH how will I choose between which shoes stay and which ones have to go!
