A little shocked and having a sad

I just got off the phone with a coworker who works in one of my company's Canadian branches. I've been with my company for four years, and I've handled this branch's accounting stuff since day 1. I've come to really enjoy the guys I work with there, am Facebook friends with two of them, call them up just to joke around (especially since I know they're busy and stressed out right now).

So, I talked to Coworker A, who tells me that Coworker B, who's been my main contact there since day 1, had "some shiiit" go down after work yesterday. Come to find out that Coworker B's wife had kicked him out due to a problem with alcohol. Also find out that the "vacation" he'd taken a couple months ago was really him being MIA due to an alcohol issue. They're a small, close, tight-knit group of guys and they've been trying to get him help. I had a feeling something was up about two months ago when he wasn't being his normal joking self; I attributed it to the fact that their branch has been swamped lately and he was just stressed.

FF to last night. Apparently, in his new place he's moved into since his wife kicked him out, he fell and hit his head. He had emergency brain surgery in the wee hours of the morning and they didn't expect him to live through the surgery. Well, Coworker A got a text from his wife around lunchtime, who is at the hospital, who said he lived through the surgery, but there's no sign of any brain activity. So it's very likely that he'll die naturally or have to be taken off life support. If by some miracle he lives, he'll apparently never be the same and may suffer stroke-like effects.

He's in his early 40s, has three small children under six (his daughter is three months older than mine), and is really an all-around nice guy. I am just shocked and so, so sad for his kids and his wife.

Oh, FFS.

Re: A little shocked and having a sad

  • Oh no, malibu :(

    I'm so sorry.

    Look with your special eyes.
  • I keep having this nagging little thought, too, that things were so bad that it wasn't an accident and he was trying to hurt himself (no one has any details about what happened, just that he fell and hit his head). Then I feel even worse about it, cause the guy loves his family, you could just tell. If you asked about his kids, he just lit up and couldn't wait to brag about them. I've never gotten to such a low point that hurting myself was an option, so it's such a hard thing to even think about, and I just cannot picture someone with a lot to live for even considering it. It hurts my heart to think that his kids might lose their dad.
    Oh, FFS.
  • How awful. I'm so sorry. :(
  • Jesus, I am sorry. :(

T&P for all who knew him.

That is terrible.  How awful was his wife and kids.

  • How awful.

  • I am so sorry for all involved and sorry you are experiencing this.
  • There is nothing I can say because this is all beyond awful.  I guess I can just say it's okay to be sad.  My thoughts and prayers are with all who knew him.  (especially his kids)
  • Quick update: he had another surgery to remove bleeding on the brain, and I'm told they think he suffered a stroke as well. He did wake up at one point but they put him in a medically induced coma to keep him from moving and doing any damage. It doesn't sound like he's doing well or that if he does survive, he'll ever be the same again.
    Oh, FFS.
