people with small children/child - cleaning Q

when do you clean your house?  i'm back at work now so time is at a premium.  it is so hard to find time to clean but i refuse to NOT clean.  we deep clean once a week b/c i am anal about living in a super clean and un-cluttered house.  so, we've been doing it on fridays (my preferred day).

H will clean his "jurisdictions" (lol - duggars!) during the day [on fridays] when he gets a chance.  he is home with the baby on fridays, so he cleans while G naps or plays.  and then when i get home around 5-6pm, i clean my areas while he feeds and bathes the baby.

it is just such a PITA.  but i don't know how else to do it.  it was so easy before we had the kid b/c we could just clean in a couple of hours without any interruptions.  and i hate hate hate cleaning on the weekends - it's such a waste of a day (and i say 'day' b/c we would probably fart around all saturday morning and by the time we start and finish cleaning, it would be mid-afternoon).

my other option is a housecleaner, but i hesitate to do that only b/c it seems like such a challenge to find a good person.  and i hate dpoing a little bit a day b/c i like my whole house to be clean at once.  and i hate cleaning, so doing a bit every day is not something i want to do.

blech.

Re: people with small children/child - cleaning Q

  • We clean sat or sun morning and we just do it. We each have our things to do and we do them. Henry usually plays while we are doing this. One of us is watching him, cleaning at the same time. We can do a pretty thorough job in 2 hours with the both of us. We keep it pretty neat and clean inbetween, so it's never too arduous.

I want a cleaning lady so bad. (Not that that's anything new.)
  • I am always cleaning. Wake up, toss a load into the wash, shower get kids fed, clean up breakfast, dress them, make beds, haul ass

We sweep daily and vacuum (carpets in bd only) weekly. Sadly we rarely mop anymore unless you count walking around with Kirkland baby wipes on your feet as mopping. It's more spot clean (no shoes in our gaysian house)

Bathrooms get the scrub down on sun night.

Kitchen is always always getting cleaned. I spend the most time there

  • After the girls are in bed, naptimes, and sometimes after dinner, but before they're in bed (that's usually when I vacuum their rooms upstairs.

But I have every intention of having a cleaning lady by August, at the very latest.  I don't love the idea of trying them out, but I think we'll start by asking H's co-workers who they use, and then probably getting a membership with Angie's List.

  • Honestly, get a housecleaner.  Ask for recs from friends and coworkers, that's how we found ours both times.  I've actually referred this one to several friends too.  We just do some pick up every day. On sundays we do laundry, and sunday night we unclutter as much as possible.  She comes monday mornings.  It is so nice to have the house perfectly clean when you walk home from work.  I also highly recommend getting it weekly, because if it is every other week, you still have to clean your toilet and mop your floor, so what is the point?

It is totally worth the cost.  We've had her come twice a week before to do our landry too, lol.  One day we'll splurge and just book her twice a week forever.

  • I struggle with this because my kids (and my slob husband) make such a mess all the time.

I clean the kitchen twice a day.  I scrub the bathrooms on Wed when I'm off and no one else is home.

I generally do a load of laundry every day, get it folded and put away.

All beds are made before I leave for work and I do extra spot cleaning on the days my babysitter gets here before I do.

I can't justify spending on a cleaning person.  There are just so many other things I want.

oh yeah, mopping.  In our house it is more like "CRAP!  someone's coming over!  Grab the spray mop and do the area around elizabeth's chair and entry hallway NOW!"

Laundry is constantly running, and I dustmop every day to every other day.  Kitchen gets swept after every meal (man, I have got to get my kid to stop throwing food off her high chair).

  • ok, so there is no secret to this (clearly).  well, except that it's time for me to find a cleaning lady.

  • Daily---empty dishwasher, reload, scrub sink, wash counters, table, highchairs, average 2 loads laundry, take out garbage & recycling usually twice, vacuum, load up dishwasher and run a load, hand wash certain dishes, clean kitchen after each meal.

wash the kitchen floor 2 to 3 times a week usually.  Can be more depending.

    bathrooms try and do weekly.

  • I'm considering a cleaning lady for a deep clean every two weeks. H is the a lot and the big stuff isn't getting done. I tidy and do laundry everyday. Kitchen gets cleaned while G is eating. Bathrooms I do every second day, usually also when she's eating.

Doing it on Friday is a good idea, I also like my house clean for the weekend. My H is anal and a master cleaner so when he's here he vacuums, gets rid of garbage and recycling, organizing.

  • i try to clean the kitchen every night before we go to bed.

honestly ive had to lower my standards. i try to have it presentable most days, but with everything going on? nope.

This is me too.  I don't think I've had time for a deep clean once since DS was born, much less once a week.  I can't imagine it will get easier as he gets more mobile.

This is when having a dog comes in extremely handy. When DS was using a high chair the area underneath it was often the most spotless area of floor in the house. :)

  • I really want a cleaning person too. I do most of the cleaning around here. The kitchen gets cluttered so quickly with all the bottles and everything. I clean the bathrooms weekly and H usually does the vacuuming. I sweep the floors a lot too because I hate seeing specks and dust. I swiffer and then I use the mini dirt devil to suck up all the little bits that the swiffer doesn't pick up.
