Plastic deckig? TimberTeck & Azek...

H and I are trying to decide on decking options for our new construction.

Has anyone used any form of plastic decking? How do you like it? Would you do anything differently?

A major concern I have is that plastic decking is mostly made out of unknown recycled materials, and PVC. I'm concerned from a health standpoint, that they may not be the safest materials to use for our home. Anyone have any thoughts/experience?

  • From friends who have it the biggest concerns ? where:

--Some are very slippery when wet

--The warranties vary greatly, this is an important detail as some fade quickly

--Fire rating (if that is the correct term).  Although I think this has improved greatly over years.  Friends of our had a major house fire because a grill ember caused the deck to catch on fire and it spread REALLY fast.   (the grill was on the deck)

I think over the long term is is worth the $$$ for the low maint.  We went with a stamped concrete patio. But, if we were in a sit. where we had to put on a deck we would go engineered or composite.

  • Great thanks for the reply!

I'll compare the two companies warranties, and fire ratings (we will most likely be grilling on our deck too)

I agree that this is a more cost effective option, but I am really concerned about the potention toxic effects from all the plastic !

  • I would never put in a deck that wasn't a plastic / no maintenance option. They're great for resale value and when we were house hunting there were some wood decks that were SCARY. Splinters and wood rot aren't good.
