Romney son has kids via surrogate
I find this interesting in a "huh" sort of way. It's curious, given the team they are playing for trends towards the right.
I know Jr. doesn't neccessarily subscribe to the same ideology as dear old Ward and Beaver, but again, huh.
I don't think Romney is as conservative as he says he is.

Re: Romney son has kids via surrogate
I agree on him not being as conservative as he's acting right now. Hell, I'm banking on it.
As far as the surrogate thing goes, I try not to judge how anyone goes about having kids, since I have no idea of the hardships they faced in building their family. (I know that you're not judging, MrD...not trying to imply anything).
I always wonder how fertility issues affect couples where large families are expected.

I'm trying to figure out why this is even news.
because his father is a the presumptive nominee for the Republicans and many Rs have been pushing "personhood" amendments which would make IVF/Surrogacy illegal.
It is news the same way Sarah Palin pushed for abstinence only sex-ed and her daughter ends up knocked up.
Irony maybe?
Above Us Only Sky
Ironic? No, just children who chose to live their lives differently than their parents. More like normal. I don't care what the candidates' children do/don't do.
Like it or not, how your child turns out is reflective on the parents. So when someone tells me that my kids can only have abstinence only education in school and their child is a teen mom I find it ironic and hypocritical
Above Us Only Sky
So if someone has three kids, for example, none of them will rebel/choose to do things differently? And if one child rebels, that reflects on the parents despite the fact that the other children turned out differently?
Tagg (ew, that name) actively campaigns for his father, so he's a political person. It's not like he's 12 and Chelsea awkward stage.
Ok, that's fair. However, is there any reason to believe that Romney is looking to make surrogacy illegal?
Because he Tweeted it!
"Tagg Romney spoke with the Mormon Church about his family's plans before the children were born..."
And this right here pretty much sums up my problem with the Mormon church. They are way, way, way too up in their members' personal business.
Well said.
But I do find it odd/cool that Tagg and his wife are being so open with their surrogacy story, especially in light of the Mormon church's stance on it. (Official church policy is that "Surrogate motherhood is strongly discouraged". http://www.lds.org/handbook/handbook-2-administering-the-church/selected-church-policies?lang=eng#21.4.3)
His last child was also born through a surrogate. Maybe his wife is no longer able to carry children. Her medical history is certainly not our business.
I think this matters to people who don't like Romney, and matters not at all to those who do. So politics as usual.

I don't like Romney. But the fact that Romney's son had babies born via surregate matters not at all. Not. At. All. Keep in mind, the only reason people are talking about it at all is because Tagg Tweated it!!
My only issue is that Tagg and his wife felt the need to clear their birth plan through their church. That's just weeeeeeeeird.
I don't think surrogacy is such old news yet that it's NBD. I don't have any value judgements on surrogacy, but I do think it's interesting. In the same way I think it's interesting when SJP did it or Guiliana and Bill.
Oh, I agree with you. I'm just saying politics-wise.
I also don't think it's weird that he tweeted it. I'm sure I would've tweeted about the birth of my kids if I were on twitter.
<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home D
Uhg. No one is saying the tweeting is weird. That's just a response to the "why is this a story" line.
This is what I was trying to get at in my earlier posts
Above Us Only Sky
This was my thought exactly! I totally understand and get the need for surrogacy if one desperately wants children and doesn't have any. But using a surrogate for kids 5 & 6 seems like something that only the 1% can do.
I wonder what something like that costs?

I've heard the argument that personhood amendments could potentially make IVF illegal if extra embryos are destroyed, but what does this have to do with surrogacy?
Edited: never mind. I wasn't really awake yet.
A gestation carrier or surrogate is done the same way as IVF. I think the days of using the father's sperm and the carrier's eggs are over. The legal implications of using both a woman's egg and womb would be enough for me not to do it. Better to get a donor embryo, or create your own embryo and then use a gestational carrier. But now you've gone and raised another interesting question for me to look at, thank you.
But again, where is the evidence that Romney advocates this?
Because he won't disown his grandchildren, or his son. Because his son campaigns for him, so they must agree on every issue. Because they're all rich. Etc., etc., etc.
<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home D
If you go through an agency for a gestational carrier, it's usually in the $50k - $120k range. There are a lot of variables that come into play, but that seems to be about the norm.
