dumped puppy help needed!!
Yesterday, my husband brought a puppy home from his walk. He found him collapsed in the road. The puppy is about 9 weeks old and is honestly the skinniest dog I have every see. You can see every bone and he can hardly stand up. He looks like one of those ASPCA posters. I think he is a Rot. x Lab mix. We bottle fed him yesterday because he was too weak to eat and wouldn't drink. He is a little better today, but we are having trouble keeping him interested in food. He is drinking a TON of water though, poor little guy. The vet just said to keep offering him little bits of food ever 30 minutes or so around the clock and keep him warm. He is currently snoozing on the bed with one of our other dogs and two of the cats, wrapped up in a blanket. Does anyone have any ideas of super yummy things for puppies? He is being offered a rotation of soaked puppy food (Pro Pac), pedigree canned puppy food, scrambled eggs, boiled chicken, and ground beef with rice. He eats about 2 teaspoons at a time and then gets a huge drink, goes pee, and then passes out in his blanket.
Re: dumped puppy help needed!!
I don't have any advice, sounds like what you're doing is what I would have suggested anyway.
It's so awesome that you're taking care of this poor pup. Seriously, thank you. I had a ridiculous day and this just restored my faith in humanity a little.
It sounds like you're doing the right thing - although I don't have any experience with anything like this!
However, from what I understand, if he hasn't been fed in awhile/starved, you wouldn't want him to eat a whole bunch all at once since it would make him sick.
I would stick to what your doing and make the food available to him at all times. Maybe he just can't eat a ton at once because his tummy isn't used to it.
Good luck to you! Are you planning on keeping the puppy after he's better?
Poor baby.
Have you tried to find his owners? I would let the local shelters and rescues know that you found this guy, post him on Craigslist, etc.
I think you are doing the right thing. Has the vet checked the pup or just consulted with you over the phone?
If you have pets, I would probably keep them separate because it is likely the puppy has worms (and possibly other contagious things). Most puppies need to be dewormed and if the puppy has not been cared for in a while, it is likely it was not dewormed, or has gotten worms again.
For cats that wont eat, we feed baby food (any type that is just meat and water- usually "step 1" gerber food works. nothing with onions/garlic). It is safe to do this for dogs as well, but I dont know if dogs respond as well to it. The cats LOVE this.
Do you plan to keep the pup?
Ah, I meant to say also, that drinking a lot of water can be a sign of needing to be dewormed. So that could be one reason the puppy is drinking a lot.
Thanks for showing this dog some love!
Yes.
