Thoughts on decorating with fruit

This is kind of a silly question, but I wonder if I'm alone in this. I see lots of beautiful pictures of gorgeous living rooms or offices or other rooms and the decorators have accented them with beautiful bits of color by putting a bunch of lemons in a vase for example. I love the bit of color and I've been tempted to do it myself, but I always stop and think, " why would anyone have a bunch of lemons just sitting out in their living room?" and suddenly it seems silly.  It just doesn't seem logical and it kind of bugs me. Does anyone else think that when you see it? Not that decor always has to make sense but stil...

  •  That made me think of this (and similar posts) from Catalog Living.lol

After a long day, nothing pleases Elaine more than taking off her bracelets and digging into a big bowl of lemons.

It also is making me think that I should find something decorative to do with the 25 lb bag of oranges that DH brought home, instead of just leaning it against the wall. ;)

  • I have a bowl of lemons on my dining room table. Dunno about jars of them in an office but fruit makes tons of sense to me in a dining area or kitchen.

Why?  Because I have a lemon tree in the backyard that produces like crazy just like everyone else in my neighborhood.  When you have lemons coming out of your ears faster than you can eat them, you start coming up with creative uses :)  I leave them in an apothecary jar until they start softening, then juice and freeze or make pie or make lemonade or use them to clean...  I have the same problem with bell peppers in the summer and apples in September, only they don't last as long at room temp so they aren't as good for decorating, but I still do it a little.  If I could only figure out how to decorate with rhubarb, I'd be in good shape!

  • Not in the living room, but I have some big glass bowls that I fill with lemons/apples/avacados or whatever I have at the time in the kitchen or dining room. I like to display things that dont need to be refrigerated in nice containers.

just don't do fake fruit. I loathe fake fruit.

  • My favorite centerpiece on my island or living room table is a big fishbowl type of vase filled with little clementines.  Reach in whenever you want a snack, and the orange color cheers the space up.

  • I'm guilty of having a bowl of lemons on my dining room table. My best friend has this too (hers are fake. Mine are real). I just grab one and use it if I need it, otherwise its out of my way. Come to think of it...I better make sure none are rotting!
  • I like the idea of using fruit as long as it's real.

  • I've often thought this when visiting decorating sites or in magazines. Often the most exciting piece in the room is the bowl of fruit (usually lemons or granny smith apples) offering a burst of color. Or it is the vase of vibrant flowers. Sometimes when you take that away, the room is pretty meh. Anyway...I've often thought decorators throw that in to make their work look more interesting than it really is...

Yes! I've noticed that too! To be clear, I think it makes sense to see fruit out in a kitchen or dining room, but it strikes me as odd when they're in someone's home office or living room. Sometimes that bit of color really enhances a room and my living room could use it, but I always stop myself, thinking it will actually look strange. But it's interesting that it can have such a positive visual impact.
