Bulldogs + drool

My husband and I really want to get an English bulldog (yes we know all about their health issues, etc.) but the one thing I don't like is dog drool...and I think they drool...a lot. LOL. So - any bulldog owners/lovers who also hate drool, and how do you deal with it?

Re: Bulldogs + drool

  • Our bulldog is 6 months up today.      Yes he drools, but not excessively.  We are lucky he is not have have a lot of loose skin around his mouth.  Not sure if that will change with time.

I don't love it, but it's sometimes part of the breed so I just deal.   Normally he drools after he drinks water, playing in the house or when we are outside.  I try and have a towel nearby to wipe his mouth.   I'm not sure there is much more you can do.

  • Well I suppose if you hate drool that much you should think about a different breed. I am not a fan of drool and thus didnt get super drooly breeds. Easy solution, no?
  • Yep, if you hate drool, do not get a bulldog. We have an American Bulldog and the drool is bad, but DH's best friend has an English an he is just as bad. Like, I have to wipe my walls down because if he shakes his head it is 6 foot up the wall. In cooler weather, he isn't that bad but when its hot, the drool is out of control. We wipe his lips off after he drinks and it helps a lot.

Also, they are huge shedders. So, if you aren't a fan of dog hair, this may not be the dog for you.

I deal with it because I really do love the big lug but I was shocked by the shedding and massive amounts of drool (he was an adult when we got him and it was in August).

  • We are lucky and ours doesnt drool too much...only when he sees me getting ready to feed him and then after he drinks.  His drool is the least of my worries.

I didnt realize how much they shed.  That is the one drawback to the breed.  Otherwise, we have no compliants.  He snores, passes gas, but we love him.

  • My EB isn't a terrible drooler - but its bad enough.  My couch always has drool on it. Slipcovers are my answer to that.

The kitchen floor is usually a mess around his water dish because he walks away from his dish while the water is just rolling off his face.

I totally agree with PP, mine is a terrible shedder.  I missed that part when I was doing my research.  That along with the chewing issues they tend to have as pups.

He's not exactly a clean dog in general.  His face and wrinkles get dirty very quickly, and then he pushes doors open in the house with his head leaving brown nastiness behind.  It's a constant battle to clean up after him.

They're a challenging breed for sure in lots of ways.

  • Huh. I learn something new everyday. I had no idea these dogs shed so much. I always thought they had short sleek coats and would of guessed the shedding was nothing.

This 100%.  Having white trim/doors is not fun.

Yep, I think I should own stock in Mr. Clean Magic Erasers!

  • My friend has an EB and she leaves out ice cubes instead of water.  It helps with the drool a lot.

However, I agree with the PP, if you are already worried about drool, and EB might not be for you.
