Would you head to urgent care?

P has had a fever since yesterday morning. It was 101 most of yesterday, 102 this morning. She has a cough, sounds a bit stuffy, but no other symptoms that I can tell. Thing is, I gave her advil about an hour ago, and it hasn't gone down at all. What say you?

Re: Would you head to urgent care?

  • I always struggle with this stuff. You're probably fine not going, but the whole tick thing this year has me on hyper alert even though I think most people are blowing it way out of proportion.

Maybe give it a little longer and then go in if it doesn't improve. Sometimes M's fevers break only with a luke-warm bath.

    Hope it breaks soon.

  • Do you have a nurse line you can call? They generally tell me that unless my kid is lethargic or having difficulty breathing to push fluids and rotate tylenol and advil. Also, what dosage did you give her? I usually go by the Dr. Sears chart as it gives better dosage per weight.

  • She is lethargic, just sitting and staring at tv. I have been pushing fluids but having a hard time getting her to take them. Popsicles, even. I will check the Dr. Sears chart.

I took her temp again just now and it was down half a point, so I will wait. She is going to her dad's tonight, so I just want to make sure I have and idea of what's going on before I take her.

  • If she's lethargic then I would definitely call.Better safe than sorry.

  • Probably not. I would want to though but they usually just say its a virus and send me home. If she's drinking fluids and the temp isn't to high I would try to wait it out.

  • Alternate between tylenol and motrin every 3-4 hours, since she is drinking some fluids you are fine to wait it out for now.  Sitting in from of the tv just watching is okay, she does not feel good and its normal.   When she is unresponsive to anything then I would take her in.   Most docs would not really do anything for a fever less than 103.  Give the meds time to work.

Right now, no. I wouldn't, I would expect a certain amount of lethargy if my kid is sick and the temp isn't really super duper high. I'd continue with the advil and if I couldn't get her to drink anything throughout the day, I'd reassess at that point. but if she's drinking a little, I think she's ok.

  • I would not unless she was lethargic or the fever got really high.
