I've been lurknig here awhile and have a question about trees.
I also posted on my local board.
DH and I just bought a new home in Minneapolis, MN. The front yard gets direct sunlight all day.
We are looking for a tree species that will provide some shade and can withstand the weight of snow/ice. Also, a moderate or fast grower is preferred. Any advice?
Thanks!
Re: Tree Rec?
AS A GENERAL RULE, fast growth trees are short lived and weak wooded. The phrase "live fast, die young" applies.
If you have room, get an Oak. Oak (Quercus) is critically important to more species of birds and bugs than just about any other genus. So knowing nothing else about the site, I'd recommend Oak.
After living in an area with TONS of fast-growing Cottonwoods that are now dying, I'll second NB's advice. They are such a problem.
That said, I'm looking for a fast-grower in one area of my property - near the garden where it's empty and will be relatively easy to remove later - because I have an annoying, borderline creepy, neighbor and need a screen of some kind before I go nuts.
