Help me with a back up brand.
I fed TOTW for over a year with no problem (Sierra) but with the recall I am looking for a back up brand.
G is a lab mix. He is allergic to chicken and cannot tolerate a majority of grains. I would like to keep it to a similar priced food but I am willing to spend more. I am not ready to make the switch to raw.
I am pretty limited as far as stores go. There are a few smaller specialty stores near work but at home we only have Petco, Petsmart, and Tractor Supply.
I am looking on dogfoodanalysis right now to see what I can find in my area. Any help would be appreciated.
Re: Help me with a back up brand.
I haven't found another grain-free food that's at the same price-point as ToTW. The following are all more expensive.
Nature's Variety Instinct Lamb or Salmon
Wellness CORE Ocean
California Natural Grain-Free (they have a couple of chicken-free formulas)
Acana Grasslands or Pacifica
There are a few suggestions in this thread: http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/65726154.aspx
We have been using TOTW, but stopped by the pet store today and picked up a bag of pure formance lamb to try out - it's grain free, freeze dried dog food, and they have three proteins, chicken, lamb, and duck. But we just bought our first bag of it today, so I don't really have personal experience with it yet and it might not be at any of your local stores.
ETA: For us it was 1.81/lb compared to 1.6/lb TOTW for a 30 lb bag of TOTW and bag of the new stuff that makes 16.5 lb. The bigger bag of the new stuff was 1.34/lb, so a little cheaper.
We have corn and wheat allergies in our household, and we just switched to Veterinarian Formulated at the recommendation of the store clerk. Here's the review: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/vf-complete/
We would have preferred to switch to Earthborn Holistic Grain Free, but the store was out due to people snapping it up to replace their recalled foods http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/earthborn-holistic-grain-free/

That is what we switched to due to the recall. B also has chicken allergies. It is more expensive but so far we really like it.
Thank you all for the suggestions. I am looking into the brands and formulas now.
Am I being overly paranoid about his chicken allergy by not wanting egg products in his food?
In my experience, I avoid chicken eggs too if possible because they seem to cause my dog digestive issues.
