New job, need new wardrobe
I am starting a new job in a few weeks and will need a whole new wardrobe. My current job is with a clothing retailer so we just wear the clothes they sell in the stores. The new job's dress code is business casual.
What are the essentials I should start with knowing that I will have to build it up slowly?

Congrats! I started a new job this past month also and was in the same situation. My office is business casual also.
Definitely: Cardigans in different colors, black and brown pumps, black and grey trousers, pencil skirts in black, grey and brown. Also colored blazers are fun.
When I got my new job I hit Loft, J.Crew and banana republic.
Cardigans
Dress pants in basic colors - navy, khaki, gray, brown, black
Tops - I'd start with short sleeve nicer tees and maybe a few printed or solid blouses since it's spring/summer
Pencil skirts or a-line skirts in basic colors
A few casual dresses
Trouser jeans in a dark uniform wash if you are allowed to wear them
Flats and heels to go with pants and skirts
Accessories such as necklaces, scarves and earrings to dress up basic outfits
