Re: Recall Update - 12 brands! :(

  • We got Hi Tek Grain Free. It is at the same price point as TOTW, actually a bit cheaper. The other suggestions was Orijen but we go throught 30 lbs bi-weekly and that is just too much. dogfoodadvisor.com gives it 4.5 stars, it wasn't on dogfoodanalysis.com.

  • Thanks for the recommendation! Do you know if the lamb flavor has any chicken, duck, or beef products in it? Cassie (my pretty lab in sig sitting in a park) is very allergic to them and last time I switched brands I noticed many have chicken buried in their ingredient list to add more protein.

  • I just went and got the bag, it does contain chicken products and egg.

  • My guy loves Fromm. Salmon tunalini is great but there is chicken liver in it (although it is pretty far down on the list). Or maybe try Acana Pacifica?

  • So are the stores in the areas most affected completely clearing the shelves, hence needing to switch brands completely? From what I've read, it sounds like they narrowed down the batches that are harmful. Are most switching completely more as a precautionary? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I don't live in one of the states diamond listed on their site and don't feed their food. Just curious!

Some feel that Diamond has gotten too big and too careless with quality control, so they are switching brands.

We just bought a bag of California Natural, since our local store removed all Diamond products from their shelves.

Thanks for the update. We just switched to California Natural too. Hope it goes well.

This cracks me up. It's a voluntary recall. If they had gotten careless with quality control, they would not have issued a voluntary recall.

  • ::sigh:: Nature's Domain is part of the recall too and Newnan loves that food and has done really well on it...we threw our bag out after we emptied it into our storage container. I guess we should stop feeding it? I have no way to check the code. He just went for his annual at the vet yesterday and all the tests (so far--no blood results till tomorrow) came back normal.

we were in the same boat- dumped the food in the bin, tossed the bag. We put all of the remaining (1/2 bag) natures domain in a trash bag and took it to Costco- they gave us a full refund

I think it's a little extreme to completely switch brands over this type of voluntary recall. My dogs do fantastic on TOTW and we aren't switching (the bag we have is not part of the recall anyway). Human foods, like spinach and fruits, are periodically recalled b/c of salmonella or other bacteria. I wouldn't stop eating spinach completely.

I kind of agree, but I do hope they stop using this plant. Apparently it is the same one that had the mold problem that killed several dogs a couple years ago, so it isn't really an isolated problem. That is a little more concerning to me. http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news%2Fconsumer&id=8643177

Innova or Evo are other options for foods too. http://www.naturapet.com/

  • so annoying!  we feed canidae grain free, and it's not on the recall right now, but i'm waiting for it to be.

Ours is in a bin too. Maine wasn't listed on the recall list, but I'll probably get rid of the rest of what I have anyway just to be on the safe side.

Kirkland Signature Nature?s Domain Salmon Meal & Sweet Potato Formula for Dogs (December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

I only see the Salmon one on the recall, should I be concerned since I feed the Turkey kind of Nature's Domain?

  • Check out the Nature's Domain FB Page--I believe they said only the salmon formula.
  • Solid Gold has been added to the list

As to those who think it's extreme switching food for a voluntary recall- I'd rather be safe than sorry, especially since this isn't the first time Diamond has had a recall of this scope.
