Freezer jam? Really dumb question

So, since I'm not officially canning it, and just keeping it in the freezer, do I need to boil the jars?  Or just wash them prior to making the jam?

I got some strawberries from the strawberry patch on Friday, and I need to do something with them.  Like, today.  Halp!

Re: Freezer jam? Really dumb question

  • I don't can, so I might be totally wrong, but if you are planning to keep them in the freezer for an extended amount of time, I would boil them to avoid freezer burn? Maybe? Again, I might be totally wrong.

  • Just wash them, although I never used glass jars for freezer jam. Always used plastic Tupperware-type bowls with lids.

OK.  I'm officially dumb.  The thought of using plastic (in which I store EVERYTHING else I freeze...soup, chili, casseroles, etc) never even occurred to me.

They would actually last longer in glass because of the tighter seal. I've made freezer jam without boiling the jars and they keep for a few months in the freezer.
