Are fake flowers ever ok?

I usually hate fake flowers.  But I have two spots that look fantastic with red roses.  It's hard for me to keep up with fresh flowers!  Should I cave and buy fake?  Or ideas on alternatives for the mantel and dining table?

Yes. Some of them are extremely real looking, and even feel real to the touch. The good quality ones like this are CRAZY expensive.

  • I definitely think it can be okay. Like NB said, some are so real looking that, even close up, it's hard to tell the difference.

  • My sister has some beautiful fake flowers that I always think are real until I touch them.  They're from Ethan Allen, I think.  I don't think I could bring myself to spend that much though because they were expensiiiiive.

  • I think so. I don't really care what people think, I like them in certain spots in my house. I try to get the ones that look real.

However, I do draw the line at fake flowers outside. My neighbor has some on her garage. It's never ok for fake flowers outside.

  • There are some amazing, very realistic fake flowers/plants out there, but the most convincing of the them are very, very expensive.

It seems like they are usually not easy to keep clean though, and I think that the dust is the big giveaway and what cheapens the look.

  • I have some fake white hydrangea I got from PB Outlet. I like them :)

At Christmas I have some fake amaryllis I put in its place.

I wouldn't go overboard with fake flowers, but I think they can look nice in the right application.

  • If you keep them dusted and don't buy them at the dollar store.

I disagree. I have been doing a lot of research on fake flowers for my window boxes and there is a lot out there that look great. I have read that plain greens are great for boxes. I have issues with my window box flowers never lasting (due to my laziness, I admit). I do have a neighbor that "plants" plastic flowers instead of annuals/perennials and it is very odd looking and, I agree, something you should never do.

  • Meh, I personally don't care for them. Even if they look real, anyone who goes to your house more than once will know they're not. But if you like them and they make you happy, then go for it.

  • I have hydrangeas in a few rooms and forcythia in my mud room. They look fine to me.

I have some fake flowers that everyone always think are real.  The only thing is that they are a dust magnet.  They need to be dusted pretty much daily.

  • we have fake gerberas in a tall vase which we get complimented on often, but they look pretty real and we didnt go crazy with them, we also have fake red succulents that honestly, I wouldnt be able to tell they are fake if I didnt buy them...having said that, cheap fake flowers tend to look more fake, and as people said, need to be moved or dusted often. I like that I dont have to buy new flowers all summer because I defintaly cant afford new fresh flowers every week and the vase was my grandmothers so I definatly want it displayed.

  • I am not a huge fan, but after killing a series of orchids I finally have a fake orchid stem stuck into a real orchid plant.  Orchids look so preternaturally perfect anyway that it doesn't look bad, and the real orchid plant around it keeps it from looking fakey.
