Re: Shiba Inu owners.....
My brother has an 8 year old Shiba.
She is very, very typical of the breed. She is aloof and..I would say independent. She's nice to everyone in our family but it takes awhile for her to warm up to new people, and she is perfectly happy napping in a sunny place that is NOT around our family..in contrast wherever I go my mini schnauzer and English Pointer (and our cat) are generally right on my heels (even to the bathroom haha)
She is a bit older now but in her youth she was able jump a 6-7 foot high fence. This is also breed typical.
She's pretty interesting--for instance she recently found a baby possum in the backyard--she was gently touching it and "huffing" at it..and constantly looking back at my Bro for HIM to handle it.
Tips for owning a Shiba, I would just say that it is VERY important to socialize, socialize, socialize. Both with other dogs and people. Because they tend to introversion, this can drive to anti-social behavior. My brother's dog HATES other dogs running up and simply saying hello to her. Take your dog places where it can have positive interactions with other people and dogs.
I also think they have the propensity to get fat..so be really careful, feed a high quality food and don't overfeed. They "can" have eye problems such as glaucoma.
We love her very much. She's a great, very special dog! I would just recommend reading up on Shibas getting to know other owners and really embracing what kind of dog you have
