does this sound like allergies?

so, our dog has a runny nose.  It started about 2 months ago.  The first trip to the vet resulted in two weeks of antihistamines.  He got an infection before he finished them (green stuff in his nose) and went on an antibiotic.  That seemed to clear it up, but two weeks later he had another infection.  A different vet in the same practice thought maybe the first infection hadn't really cleared. Two more weeks of antibiotics.  He was fine for three days, and then the runny nose started again, but no infection.  The second vet suggested a different/stronger antihistamine.  Neither of the antihistamines really made a difference.

I feel like the vets are just experimenting - try this and see if it works.  On the one hand, it doesn't seem serious because his behavior hasn't really changed (he's still eating and playing), but he's having trouble breathing, and he's gagging at night and constantly licking his nose.

Do I stick with the same vet because they know his history, or do I take him somewhere else since they don't seem to know what the problem is?

  • I wish I had an answer, but my dog Oscar has been going through pretty much the same thing!  At first they treated him for kennel cough, but that didn't work.  Then the vet diagnosed him with pneumonia and he had two rounds of antibiotics to kick that.  Now, he still has the clear nose goop and he's sneezy and coughing, but no behavioral changes.  I'm extremely interested in any advice you may get.

  • Could be allergies, could be an immunity issue and sounds slightly like a fungal infection my friend's dog had....aspergillosis or something?

  • Thank you kellbell.  A brief internet search appears to indicate this may be what my dog is experiencing.  Any idea how your friend treated her dog?  The articles I looked at weren't terribly clear.
  • Hmm, I looked it up too... he's not coughing up blood or anything and he doesn't have a fever.   it's mostly just the constant clear discharge from both nostrils, and then gagging and choking at night.

    I guess I need a specialist

    Thanks for the advice.
