How realistic is it?

How much stock should be placed in the amount of time a PCS is supposed to be? This will be the first PCS either one of us has experienced other than tech school and I'm just wondering how realistic is it to take the time period they give us seriously? I am aware that they can and will move H whenever they need to but when they say he will be in X for Y amount of time is there a decent chance this is the case?

I ask this because I am curious about finding a job and since I hope to work as a counselor in some form I will have clients and want to be able to take on long term clients if I can.

In short: Does you location length tend to be as expected or do you find yourself moving quicker or later than you thought you would be?

Thanks!

Re: How realistic is it?

  • Well it depends.... if it is a school type thing and it's a set amount of time, then it has been pretty much according to what they said - example, we lived in Monterey for almost 3 years because that is how long grad school then language school took.

The first time we lived in San Diego we were only here 2 years. But, husband applied for and was accepted into a special program, so we left earlier.

Our time has looked like this: 6 months in N. VA, 3 months in VA Beach (this was for a school type thing so it was as expected), 2 years in San Diego (shorter than expected), 3 years in Monterey (as expected), 1 year in China (expected), and now back to San Diego. It really depends though and I don't think we are a typical case.

  • H's first assignment was cut short because he applied to grad school.

The second assignment was grad school, so that was a fixed amount of time and exactly what we expected.

The third assignment was Cairo. There was a revolution and we were evacuated about halfway through our assignment. Obviously, this is uncommon.

The fourth assignment is UPT, another school and therefore a fixed amount of time.

    So really, there's no telling.

  • It sounds like whenever someone's time was cut short it was due to a personal choice to apply for something (other than the revolution issue, of course).

So it seems like there is some concreteness to the length of time they station you somewhere.

  • My first base was 27 months. Second base 16 months. Third base was two and a half years. I've been at my fourth base for a year. It all depends. Needs of the military and all that jazz.

  • Our first base was a 6 month stay. It was just training and we knew it would be short. I didn't bother looking for a job there. Now base #2, M will be here for at least 4 years. Who knows after the 4 years is up. Knowing were here for awhile, I got a job.

  • DH has always been kept longer but there's a lot of variables that go into it starting with individual circumstances and leading up to shortages in his particular year group/ job combination. And the variables tend to change given the passage of time.

Two of DH's short assignments (since we were married, I'm not exactly sure of what his schedule was before we met) were for schools.

However, we are in the midst of an assignment that was supposed to be 3-5 years, and may end up cut down to about 14-18 months.  Things are still not set in stone, but shortly after getting to this assignment, DH found out that they may move the unit to another base, and he'd be moving with it.  It is _not_ a desired move, and we would prefer to stay put, but it's not up to us.  :(  It might just be DH going alone, or it might be me going with him.  That is still up in the air, as well, so things are _really_ uncertain right now for us.

This is why I'm glad we didn't buy here.  We toyed with it when we realized we might be here for up to five years, but decided against it, just in case (and with the housing hit lately, we were nervous about the potential for further value drops).  So happy we don't have to worry about that in addition to the uncertainty of where we will be living in so short a time...

(DH is Army, active duty...  branch of service might matter on this, I'm not sure.)
