Our opened TOTW bag is not part of the recall. I am not sure if everyone is losing confidence on TOTW now after all the recalls on Diamond. Our dog can't have chicken (he gets very bad gas and very soft poop on it), we know lamb works for him but we really haven't tried other brands of lamb (except Acana, that one gave him a little gas and softer poop, but not as bad as anything with chicken) or other forms of protein since the moment we got something worked we stuck with it. My H cannot deal with gas so food selection has been difficult! I will be following dog food threads for sure!
Should I be switching brands after this? Ugh, this sucks because we just finally got him back on TOTW after I tried messing with food to get him to eat more. A switch will go smoothly if the first one we try works. But if we end up getting gas and soft stool, is it recommended to finish the small bag then change to a new one or back to old food first??
For example is we currently feed him TOTW:
1. TOTW>newfood1>newfood2
or
2. TOTW>newfood1>TOTW>newfood2
I previously finished the bag and slowly transitioned to new food as the dog food itself is so expensive
Re: another transition and TOTW question
When I found out that TOTW was included in the recall, I became a fan on FB of TOTW so I could keep an eye on their updates. I was *shocked* (in the car wreck oh-my-gosh-this-is-horrible-but-I-can't-look-away way) to read all the anger from people in their comments on TOTW's page. People talking about how they used to think that they were feeding a "good" food, but now they feel "lied to", "betrayed" (seriously), and that TOTW has lost their business forever and they cannot switch foods fast enough. I read through as much negativity as I could stand, all the while thinking, "are you people freaking kidding?!" If I could say anything to those folks (assuming they would actually listen) it would be this:
A. as they state on their website, NONE of the TOTW samples have tested positive for salmonella, therefore, keep in mind:
B. this is a voluntary recall, they are doing it as a precaution (which quite frankly, I as one of their customers appreciate. I would much rather see a voluntary recall occur as a precaution, than have something terrible happen to my girls and the company never acknowledge a problem or an error in any way. (THEN, I could understand feeling "betrayed" as a customer.)
C. a voluntary recall does not mean that the actual food itself is somehow all of a sudden "low quality". Whether your bag was or was not part of the recall, it is still the same quality of food as it was before we heard about the recall.
D. This is not TOTW's fault. If any blame were going to be placed over quality control (which is where I assume the whole Salmonella scare comes about, anyway) it would be the Diamond plant in SC. And for as long as human beings are going to be involved in any kind of manufacturing or production process, mistakes are going to happen. $hit happens at one time or another.
So the moral of the story is: if your bag of TOTW was not part of the recall, I would not worry, and would not lose confidence in them as a company. I would not go through all the extra work to try and find your dog another food. If he does well on TOTW, I would keep him on it and just keep an eye on things regarding Diamond and the recall, going forward.
I am 99.9% a lurker on this board and know no one will recognize me, so let me also add that No, I am not affiliated with Diamond or TOTW in any way, shape or form, other than being a purchaser of their products.
5 cats. 1 baby.
I agree with Lillies, recalls are unfortunately a fact of life these days especially when one facility makes so many different brands. It happens all the time for people food, it's bound to happen for pet food too. When Wellness had a cat food recall last year, I had to temporarily switch because cans were nowhere to be found. I was upset at Wellness at first, but I switched back when it was safe because it was still a good food (although now they eat Evo because of allergies).
Same with us. The 30# bag we just finished was on the recall list - so I'm submitting it to them for a coupon for a free bag. We will continue to buy TOTW.
Same here. I have to switch BOTH my dog and cat to other brands temporarily because all of our stores have pulled it, regardless if it was on the recall list or not. It's horrible timing for us since we leave on an 8-day cruise next week and have a co-worker staying at the house with the pets. I'm going to mix in the temporary food (same protein, still grain-free) with the remaining food we had for them and hope for the best until we can get more TOTW.
Crap happens, and not all products are perfect 100% of the time, but I'm not going to switch to something else just because of one recall instance in however many years.
