HM PR today- RR inside (long)

4 years ago I ran my first hm in 2:22. After I finished I kind of fell off the running wagon. I got back into it in November of last year and soon after I found myself registering for the Toronto Goodlife Half-Marathon. I ran it today in 2:10. I was really hoping that I could pull off a sub 2 but I hadn't really put in the training to do it. I found the race for myself good overall but I probably wouldn't do this particular race again, I prefer the smaller races.

The pros were: nice course with a net downhill running through some very nice areas of Toronto, ok crowd support- but not great, and fantastic weather. The cons: I found it poorly organized- no start corrals, no signage leading to the start of the race, aid stations spread far apart and they were running out of water and gatorade, there were supposed to be gels at km 9.5 and there wasn't even an aid station there, and mass confusion at the finish.

I ran with my friend the entire time which was nice. I found that as soon as we started the km's were ticking by very fast. The crowd was very heavy at the start and it never really thinned out and we started at a slower pace than I wanted to but combined with the heat and the crowd that was probably a good idea on our part. Before we knew it we were at the 10k mark and feeling good. We then turned off of Yonge street somewhere around that point and headed down through a neighbourhood called Rosedale. This was my favourite part. It was all downhill and we were on a beautiful street surrounded by tall trees- it didn't feel like the city at all. At around 12km I saw a girl off to the side walking with an attendant and her legs look like they had cramped up, I felt bad for her. At around the 14-15km mark the heat was getting to me and I really wished the aid stations were closer together. At every station was taking two cups of water and drinking one and dumping the other on my head and taking gatorade too. In between though my face was covered in salt and it was tough getting through it mentally. It was at this point that my knees were killing me too. I was counting down km to km at the end. Finally I we rounded to the end and I was so glad to hear 500m left! My friend and I picked up the pace and crossed the line hand in hand. Then it took about an hour to locate our DH's.

Overall I learned some things. If I want to run fast I need to dedicate myself to the training. I cannot rely on aid stations. Luckily I brought my own gels but next time I will also take my handheld bottle. DH and I will will be better organized with a meeting spot at the end. I had to borrow a strangers cell phone so I could locate him at the end. And, I think I am officially addicted to racing now!

And now a nasty pic of me at the end. I'm on the left.
