Where to buy pallets?

So I keep going back and forth as to what I want in a headboard, but I kind of think that I want to settle on stained pallets. I have looked on Craigslist but haven't had a ton of luck. Does anyone know if that is something I can pick up at Lowe's or Home Depot?

I have never seen them for sale unless you buy something that they come on (like a whole pallet of patio stones)

I always see signs at the place that sell stuff like that (independent places, not big box stores...they return pallets) for free pallets.

  •  I think if you ask a store like home depot, lowes or even super markets they might just give them to you. Nice idea!
  • You could try a wanted ad on Craigslist. I have a ton in my garage that I would give away if someone wanted them. We got them when we hand landscaping materials delivered.
  • Try contacting a company that sells hardscape materials (like pavestones).  A lot of times the purchasers will return the pallets for a deposit, so maybe they would sell you just some of the returned pallets.  Otherwise, I'd go with the Craigslist "wanted" ad.
  • Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try posting an ad on Craigslist.

  • Don't buy a pallet.

They are free at the dump. Most stores have them as well, for free. Lumber yards, home improvement stores, feed lots, etc.

  • Also a lot of palets are coated in some seriously toxic chemicals. Be careful....don't sand them down unless you know they are not toxic.

Ooo! Good to know. If I find a store that is willing to donate them to the cause that is my bedroom (or sell them for cheap), do you think they would know if they are toxic chemical free?

Probably not.  I work in a place where we deal with pallets are the time.  The come in painted.  To be honest I take product off the pallet and put it on the shelf, I have no idea what is used to paint/seal pallets before they come to us.  I don't think your regular employee at most places will either.

  • Too bad you weren't closer I have 3 sitting in my garage.  They came with the freight shipment of our toilet, tub, sink, faucet, etc.  In the past we use them for spray painting things on with a drop cloth underneath.
