I am going to be the big 4-0 later this year. To celebrate, I am having a prom.
I have rented a church gym in my neighborhood that will accommodate up to 150 for $250 so I have some coin left to play with. It will be open bar and I'll have a taco truck outside.
I grew up in a small town and prom was really a non-event, so I don't have a lot to reflect on. This is what I have so far but am looking for some additional fun ideas:
Balloon arches
"Spiked" punch with dry ice
A crescent moon back drop for photos
Also, I am debating between having it be a specific year, like the year I graduated, or maybe doing a "prom across the decades" theme. If I do the latter, I was thinking of putting a card in each invitation that gives the receiver a decade, i.e. they should dress for that decade (almost all of my friends will certainly dress up, so this is more to prevent everyone from coming in 80s outfits). Is this a good or bad idea?
Anything else from the wise minds of P&CE?

Re: NPCER: Prom ideas needed
Can I come?
Prom queen/king crowns? Maybe some sashes for some awards like best dressed, best dancer etc?
I know- sounds fun, right?
Crown is a great idea but of course I will be wearing it. Love the sash awards idea!
This sounds like a blast! I like the decades idea. Could you maybe hire a band that does covers of music from multiple decades and genres to go with that?
Yes. It's a Catholic church.
band: I really want one but that could be a budget buster. I will have a dj if I can't get a bank, tho.
Chaperones? LOL!
No ideas, but this sounds like a blast.
Great idea! I think I still have my glass from my senior prom.
ETA: I'm pretty sure it was a beer mug. Which is funny since you know it was high school senior prom.
my read shelf:
i did a prom for my 25th. we had polaroid pics of the couples under the balloon arch with those foil streamer curtains behind it. i had some souvenir picture frames for them. it was a big hit- i have co-workers that still have them up in their offices.
I'm so jealous, I want to come sooooo bad.
I like the dressing up from the decades theme. You could assign decades, and then make it a contest. Have a portion of the night where the DJ plays a hit song from each decade, and everyone dressed from that decade gets that song to dance to. Prizes to best dressed/most spirit.
Other than that. Balloon arches are a must. Crappy instant photos in awkward poses. Someone to walk around with a ruler during slow dances.
I would not assign decades--people get stressed out about that sort of thing. If people already have any appropriate outfit, I would let them wear it.
It sounds like a lot of fun to me!
There's a group near here that does a "mom prom" every year. Looks like fun.
Some stuff they do:
everybody gets a tiara
there are hairstylists and makeup people there to do people up... I think they also have a massage therapist there, too.
check out their web page. If nothing else, the look of it would be great for the invitations:
