sectional owners come in

We're wanting to buy a sectional online (we saw it already in store) and this might be a really dumb question, but how are we supposed to decide between right-arm facing and left-arm facing? (AKA: the love seat on the right or left side of the long sofa)--I know it would be easy if we were settled in a house, but we move a lot between condos/apartments so there is no way of knowing what side we'll want the "short" end of the sectional to be on. What is the majority vote? Or does it really even matter? Thanks!

Re: sectional owners come in

  • Ours was completely dependentf on the shape of the room the house would be in.  It has a right-arm facing because the other side of the room has a closet!

  • Have you considered a modular sofa, so you can change it up if you move?

  • It does matter.  We just moved and our looks silly now.  As PP said, modular would be a better choice if u plan to move.
  • We chose ours based on our LR shape and where we wanted to place the sectional. I agree with PPs, sounds like a modular sectional would be the way to go for you if you don't know your room layout or move frequently.

We chose ours based on livingroom shape.  I would have made a huge difference the other way because it would have been blocking exits.

If you plan on moving soon, I don't think a sectional is the best way to go.

  • We chose ours on our current LR, however, we plan to move in the near future(hopefully), so we went with one that should work in any room - one side is a chaise and the other is a couch.  When/if we move this couch will most likely go into the basement/rec room so it's not a huge deal.

  • It definatley matters - we chose our based on the LR shape as well.  We knew we didnt wanted the shorter side (chaise side) to run along where the hallway opening is so we had to get right facing.

I was a little anal so I also took the measurements of the sectional while in the store and went home and taped off the floor using blue painters tape to give me an idea of exactly how it would lay out and look. I found that helpful.
