Mad Men 5/6

I enjoyed this episode,

especially the unexpected Rory Gilmore as the slutty housewife and Principal Belding at the test kitchen :D

wtf was up with the elevator, is someone going to fall down that thing?

I took the elevator shaft as a metaphor for Don's newly precarious position with Megan leaving the office.  I think Megan was a leavening force for him at work (it made him a better ad man).  Since they showed the elevator shaft right after Megan left, I took it as a reference also to the opening credits (you know, where people are falling) and to Don's inevitable fall.  Maybe this also signals a follow up to Cooper's rebuke of Don a couple of episodes back that he was relying too much on a woman (either Megan or Peggy) and had lost his edge.  I expect his edge to come back at work, but it will be at the cost of the relative normalcy that Megan at work provided.

  • I loved this episode. Peggy has some b*lls! Her and Don fighting.  I loved her telling Don to shut up :)

Also, I think with Megan starting the acting thing, Don is going to have way too much time on his hands. That means trouble! He will be out womanizing soon.

And can I just say, I hate Pete more with every episode!

  • I've always loved Peggy, but man do I REALLY love her this season. She's awesome.

As for the elevator shaft, yeah I think it's a metaphor. I think Don is just scared about what is to come - this is really one of the first times he's not in control of things, including his wife because now he's not going to see her 24/7, either. I don't think Megan made Don a better ad man - I think he was just phoning it in, like Cooper mentioned. So, I'm thinking/hoping he stars being a little more vested in SCDP again. But, he may need another fall first.

Pete is just becoming more and more depressed and I wonder how it will manifest itself. I feel like they are leaning toward an attempted suicide. Didn't he mention something about that clause in his life insurance policy? I can't imagine them actually killing Pete off, but maybe just showing us the thoughts are there?

I don't even understand why he is trying to get with the housewife - it seems like he should either be a) trying to get with someone who is NOT a housewife in the burbs, since that seems to be when he stopped being as in love with Trudy as he was; or b) someone he knows he can have (like a prostitute). I really don't know what he's trying to do here - trying to get caught? Between going home with Harold (is that his name?) and knowing that Beth *could* potentially run into Trudy "at the market" I don't know what else to think.

  • I liked this episode a lot.  Definitely loved "Rory's" appearance... And Belding! I couldn't place him until I read your post. Wow, long time no see.

I loved Peggy in this episode too. Great scene with Don in the Cool Whip kitchen.

I am glad they didn't drag out Megan's "secret" and her sneaking around with auditions.  Good for her on having the guts to tell Don and quit right away. I am starting to like her even though I still get confused as to how she and Don ended up married so quickly!

I agree with this! It's only a matter of time until he gets lonely and starts sleeping around.
