Race report: Not a PR, not a PW

I went into this race (Colorado Marathon) with hopes of finishing between 3:50 and 4:15. My PR is 3:56, from May 2011. The first 18 miles were great. Downhill, incredibly scenic, peaceful. Then we got to a freaking hill at mile 19, which I probably should've walked, but stubbornly insisted upon running. I mean, trudging. I mean, wasting energy on. The wheels started to fall off after that.

By mile 22, I was toast. Everyone along the way kept saying how it was "flat from here to the end" like it was a good thing, but my legs were so wasted from the downhill portion that just propelling myself on the "flat" stretches was brutal. Walking sounded really good, but it hurt so much to get started again, so I tried to limit myself to one walk break between aid stations (previously had been walking just long enough to grab a cup) and then walked the stations as well.

I tried stretching my quads at mile 25 and my hamstrings instantly cramped up. So nevermind that; I tried a few other loosening-up stretches and got on my way. A friend who'd run the half met me about a 1/2 mile from the end and offered to take my water belt for me, which was immensely helpful. Told me just how close we really were to the end. The last mile--from the cramp-up aid station--went by blessedly fast.

After walk/running around an 11min pace for four miles, my last half mile clocked in at 8:25 pace. DH met me on the homestretch and if I'd had any water left in my body I would've cried. As it was, I started hyperventilating and babbling that I hurt, this sucked, I need to sit... and then I was done in 4:11:23. And I finally met taratru.

The end. :)

You may not have PRed but you still finished un your goal time.  Plus, you know, you ran 26.2 miles so I am impressed just on that fact alone.

Good job to you and all the runners.  Anyone who can finish a marathon regardless of time gets my respect.
