Do you get novacaine when getting a crown?
I'm just curious:) I of course mean when you go back to get the temporary tooth out before getting the actual crown on. Are you brave enough to do this procedure without novacaine or do you ask to get numbed to put the crown on?
Re: Do you get novacaine when getting a crown?
I've done it 5 times with no meds (twice on the same two teeth, plus one - ugh!)
The only times it didn't feel so good was when the temp was stuck on there with permanent cement so they had to use the tooth cleaning tool (don't know what it's called) vs. just picking cement off. But I survived; still much less annoying than having my face numb later on. It's also easier to make sure the final crown is seated properly when you're not numbed.
I tried to go through it without the novacaine (temp to perm) but they had to drill out the glue that holds the temp on... and well, I thought I could finish but my dentist insisted because I was starting to get jumpy... just go for it to begin with, it will be much faster/easier!
I guess it depends what all is involved, but I would never do it without novacaine.
I have a crown on a front tooth. I had bonding on there for years while I was growing. When it came time to put the crown on, the bonding had to be taken off, and the real tooth was drilled down to basically a little nubbin. No way in hell would I do that without novacaine.
I had to have nitrous as well to keep me relaxed enough so he could get it done. I breathed that stuff in until I couldn't feel my toes! I've never heard of being discouraged to get novacaine for a crown.
I agree with PP, for the fitting they take (pull!) the fake crown off, grind off the old cement, polish your tooth..etc etc..
Even the imagery of them messing around with a little tooth nubbin makes me feel gross.
