Do you get novacaine when getting a crown?

I'm just curious:) I of course mean when you go back to get the temporary tooth out before getting the actual crown on. Are you brave enough to do this procedure without novacaine or do you ask to get numbed to put the crown on?

Re: Do you get novacaine when getting a crown?

  • I usually have to be knocked out completely to do dental work because of prior bad experiences. However, once the tooth is prepped for a crown and you already have a temp on, they usually just pop the old off and cement the new on no meds. I have had 2 done this way and was just fine, with a little deep breathing. But it actually didn't hurt at all. GL
  • Absolutely!  I'm a total chicken when it comes to dental work.  I just had a temporary crown put on last week and have to go back for the permanent one and will probably ask to be numbed for that one just in case.  I've only had one other and it hurt so badly, even to get the permanent crown on - I had to get several shots of novocaine for that one.  Not worth being in pain to me!
  • I haven't decided yet if I'm going to be brave enough to do without the novacaine when going back to get the crown in. I think I'll try:)
  • Get it!!  My dentist makes the crown in one visit so I was already numb but I did not like the crown adjustment one bit.  He'd push it on, pull off, file bits, and repeat.  I was starting to get feeling back & I could feel the pressure, plus my gums were starting to hurt. I only had one crown, on the top right in the back, so I wasn't numb & drooling for the rest of the day.

  • No. It's not invasive , no drilling etc. it won't be painful and when you're numb you don't bite with the same forces which means you could leave and it won't fit right in regards to your bite. You can get numb, but they probably will discourage that.

  • I didn't need novocaine; there was nothing even remotely uncomfortable about having the permanent crown put on.  Pop off the temporary, put on the permanent, bite for a minute, have the extra adhesive picked out of your mouth, and you're done.

I've done it 5 times with no meds (twice on the same two teeth, plus one - ugh!)

The only times it didn't feel so good was when the temp was stuck on there with permanent cement so they had to use the tooth cleaning tool (don't know what it's called) vs. just picking cement off. But I survived; still much less annoying than having my face numb later on. It's also easier to make sure the final crown is seated properly when you're not numbed.

  • I would get novacain for a cleaning if I could...I really don't like the dentist!!!

  • Wait...when I had my crown put on they had to burn all around my gums with a little torch. No one else has had this delightful experience?!

I tried to go through it without the novacaine (temp to perm) but they had to drill out the glue that holds the temp on... and well, I thought I could finish but my dentist insisted because I was starting to get jumpy... just go for it to begin with, it will be much faster/easier!

  • I guess it depends what all is involved, but I would never do it without novacaine.

I have a crown on a front tooth.  I had bonding on there for years while I was growing.  When it came time to put the crown on, the bonding had to be taken off, and the real tooth was drilled down to basically a little nubbin.  No way in hell would I do that without novacaine.

I had to have nitrous as well to keep me relaxed enough so he could get it done.  I breathed that stuff in until I couldn't feel my toes!  I've never heard of being discouraged to get novacaine for a crown.

Huh?  I always get 'cained up when I get the crown put on. I've never had a problem with bite. Also my dentist doesn't discourage it at all. They want you to be comfortable.

I agree with PP, for the fitting they take (pull!) the fake crown off, grind off the old cement, polish your tooth..etc etc..

Even the imagery of them messing around with a little tooth nubbin makes me feel gross.
