C25K, or just run?

I completed C25K last year, and felt great about it.  Then I promptly quit running.  It was just too darn hot (June in Houston).

I'd like to start up again, of course I'm going to end up with the same heat problem.  Anyway, should I do C25K again, or map out a route and just do what I can as I can?  I seem to remember when doing C25K that I started walking because I was told to start walking, but I didn't feel like I needed to walk.  I don't know enough about running to know what is the right way to do this.

Re: C25K, or just run?

  • I had done C25K a few years ago and then started it again this year but switched to a C210K program because I felt like I could handle that. Personally, since I was just getting back into it and building up my endurance I needed a plan to follow otherwise I wouldn't have stuck with it. I'd say do what works for you. Maybe find a 10k training plan or do C25K again but start a few weeks in or just run if that works for you.
  • In your case I'd probably get out there and see what your baseline is. If you can run a couple miles (for example), I'd start there and then do intervals for the 3rd mile. Then reduce those intervals until you can run 3 miles. Once you can do that, do intervals for the 4th mile. That's how I worked up after I finished c25k and it worked for me. If you get out there and find that you can't run a mile, I'd do c25k but start a few weeks into it. Good luck!

  • I did the C25K then Bridge to 10K last year then quit for 6 months due to knee issue.

I recently picked back up but jumped in near the end of C25K for a week just to get back into the flow then moved to the Bridge. I certainly wouldn't start totally over but maybe try to get back mid-program?

  • I've done and redone C25K a number of times. Sometimes I started at the beginning and sometimes I started halfway through.

The last time I did it, August 2011, was the first time that it "stuck" and I went beyond the program. It's been awesome and I feel like I've fallen in love with running. It took a while, but I did a 10K in December 2011, and a half-marathon in March. Now I'm eyeing the marathon.

I would probably just jump back in maybe a few weeks in and then transition to a Bridge to 10K program. Maybe even sign up for a race in the fall or late summer to motivate you over the summer.
