Very excited that I completed my first HM yesterday! Prior to February (when I started my training) I had never run a race or more than 3 miles at a time. I trained hard and very proud that I was able to complete the race yesterday. I was slow...but I finish under 2.5 hours which was my goal.
My question is- are GI issues typical after these long races? I literally had to live in the bathroom for the rest of the day. Even today, I am not feeling good. I am not sure if it is typical or if my body is just pissed at me for running 13 miles. Ha!
Anyone else experience something like this? Anything I can do to better prep myself for my next one?
Re: Question (TMI): GI issues after 1st HM
I also have this problem. I find that avoiding leafy greens prior to a long run helps me avoid GI issues. I eventually figured out what the cause was by monitoring what I was eating prior to long runs.
Other posters seem to have success drinking coffee prior to a long run to help clear out their system.
Also, after endurance events you are more susceptible (sp?) to getting sick. It's almost like your immune system takes a nose dive after you complete your event. Sorry, I don't have any articles to back me up (anyone??). Just keep hydrated and get better!
Good job finishing your half yesterday!
Did you ever have GI issues after your long training runs?
The only times I have had bad GI issues after a race were when I took ibuprofen beforehand. I had been having some runners' knee problems and took the ibuprofen to keep my knee from hurting during the race. Holy crap, worst stomache aches ever, I had diarrhea for two days both times. (I attributed the first time to heat, but after it happened a second time I realized what I had done both times.)
Hope you feel better soon and congrats on your first HM!

No- I never had issues on/ after my long runs. Funny that you mention the ibuprofen though because I had some post nasal drip going on a few days before the HM and yesterday morning I did take 2 before we left the house because my throat was feeling sore. I wonder if there is a connection.
