Updating My Daughter's Room: WDYT? (PIP)

Hi Ladies!

We are starting to update my daughter's room into her 'big girl room" and I'm having a hard time deciding where to go from here. We just painted above her chair rail molding a light lavendar color but right now, are leaving the bottom portion white (we may end up painting that part too though if we need to).

Here is the inspiration picture...

Here is a quick shot (a little old but you get the idea) of her room now, before I paited the top.... image

This is what I am having trouble with. I'm loving the purple/green combination but how do you decide what to buy in what color? Purple vs. Green curtains? Or do I make the bed purple or green (we are converting her crib to a full size bed - same shade as her dresser)? Would it be too much white if we don't paint the bottom half of the wall and get the white duvet covers?

I just copied all the choices below to give you guys an idea of what I can't decide between. What do you think?

The purple shade above is the exact purple that we painted, but the green is just a random green that I picked to show the color combination. The purple is Simplicity by Behr.

Thanks!!!

  • Both colors are cute-- does she have a preference? Our little tyrant is insisting on having her room painted pink. Your DD may have an opinion too!!!

  • What about painting the bottom half a pale green? Then using the green curtains and white duvet? That way the duvet doesn't fade into the wall, some hand smudges on the wall will blend in, and the curtains will stand out a little from the walls.

  • If you kept the white walls, I'd do green curtains and do whichever duvet you want. Will the white get messy easily? I'm not worried about walls, they repaint, but the white/purple trim on the duvet might be hard to keep clean. (Then again, I have a boy and he is pretty hard on.. everything.)

Exactly what I was going to suggest :)

(and if it makes you feel better, my almost 4 year old begs for a zebra room every.single.night. and she's not kidding.  I bought her a stuffed zebra and a zebra print sheet set and she said, "Now I just need stripes on the wall.")

  • Thanks everyone!! So far, Emma likes the purple (mostly because I have been gently suggesting it haha....figured I might as well try while she is still young enough). If it was up to her, she would have a bright red room. :) But she is really excited about her new purple room! Hmmm...maybe Ill look around and search for some green paint. The only issue might be that her purple is so light, it almost looks slightly blue in the evenings, so Im wondering if the green below would look funny during that time? Maybe (since I still have a lot of paint left) I'll paint the bottom too and then do the green bedding? Surprisingly, she has had the bottom white wall for 3 years and its not bad at all! I'm just waiting for the crayons to come out though. :)

    Thanks everyone!!

Personally, I would keep the bottom half white. I think it gives the room a nice, crisp, classic look. Can you order both curtains, hang them up and then decide which ones to keep?  I loved that set in teh PBK catalog, so I'm jealous.

  • Choose one color to be dominant and the other as an accent - I'd go with purple! Do the purple drapes, purple and white bedding, etc. and then accent it with little hits of green. A green ribbon around a lampshade, a green pillow and throw blanket on the bed, etc.

  • Yeah, I always loved it too (we did the same thing in my son's room as well) and I always go back and forth if I should paint the bottom in there too. Depends on the day haha. But I always end up leaning towards keeping the white. I kind of like how the kids rooms match too since they are pretty close together. Good idea though, I guess I could always order both (not tell my husband haha) and see which one works better.

Another good thing about the white on the bottom is that its a great photography backdrop! :)

  • I wouldn't paint green below the chair rail. That will take the room from Pottery Barn elegance, to Ikea cutsey.

Keep the white - its classic and beautiful!

With this added info, I amend my answer to leaving the bottom white.  I think they will compliment each other nicely.

This exactly! I wouldn't paint the bottom. I think the white is classic and really cute!

I would leave the top purple, leave the furniture the wood tone and maybe do a little jewelry box, the lamp, trash can and other little things in green.

The curtains would be cute green. If the top part of the wall and the bed spread had purple the green curtains would bring in just enough without taking away from the purple.

This. Especially if your LO likes purple.  I know mine would absolutely choose purple as the dominant color.

  • Thanks so much everyone! I think I'll go ahead and leave the bottom white, and make the purple the dominant color and just pull in green where I can. Thanks! I'll try to post some pictures when it's all finished!!

  • My DDs room is similar colors. Purple on top of chair rail, white below, green curtains.

  • Thanks so much JandR! That really helps! What a cute room! It almost looks like our girls have the same furniture as well.
