XP: What sunscreen do you use?

I'm seriously wondering if I'd get as many different answers as dermatologists I ask.  I had an appt. with a new derm. this morning, for a second opinion (about something else). I asked on my way out about sunscreens.  And the list I received is, of course, totally different from what the other derm gave me.

So, what sunscreen do you use?  A daily one for your face?  And one for when you go to the pool?

TIA!

Re: XP: What sunscreen do you use?

  • I don't know a whole lot about sunscreens, so I usually buy whatever comes in an economy pack at Costco.  This last time it was Neutrogena Cool Mist 45SPF (something like that).  Other times it's Coppertone Sport spray (30SPF).  I use the sprays when I'm running, going to the dog park, swimming, etc.  I also use an SPF15 facial moisturizer daily.

So funny, I'm exactly the same way. We got the Coppertone pack just the other day (it's on coupon!). It's two sprays and a lotion, all SPF30, I think.

The brands I like most are Coppertone or Neutrogena. I tend to use Neutrogena on my face and whatever else is handy everywhere else. I find I'm okay with an SPF30 if I pay attention and reapply when necessary.

  • daily-aveeno positively ageless spf 30

workout/water activities- aveeno continuous protection face-spf 70 on face, coppertone sport-spf 30 on body.

  • I use Neutrogena Dry Touch Ultra Sheer and change the SPF amount based on what I'm doing and what time of year it is.  I use at least SPF 45 on my face and arms daily even if I'm not planning on being outside other than driving to and from work.  In the spring/summer I increase it to 70+.  If I'm running or going to the pool or something, I use SPF 100.

They have another one I might try for outdoor activities, Wet Skin or something?

I know my dermatologist and doctor like Neutrogena products, when they asked what I use, they both commented that it's a good brand.

  • I also like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, especially for my face. It really goes on very sheer. My face gets really oily in the summer, so this is important for me.

Thanks! I actually do the same - whatever is at Sam's or Costco. It seems to work ok.  I have trouble finding some for my face that doesn't smell like sunscreen. The daily moisturizer from Neutrogena has slight scent which I can tolerate for a bit, but if I need to use it all summer, it won't take long until I skip it.  I had melanoma surgery last summer on my face, so it's become really important to put on sunscreen on a daily basis (at least on my face).
  • We used to use the spray (continuous) but found too many spots were missed after the end of the day out.

We've been using the lotion of this type Reef Safe - it's biodegradeable and safe for the water life - including live bait when you're fishing. I just ordered some of the Offshore sport for our upcoming kayak trip - it's extra sweat proof because it still stings if it gets in your eyes. Wonder if a kids or baby version would not do that? Bonus it's made just a few miles north of us and we can pick it up to save shipping! http://www.tropicalseas.com/products/reef-safe-sunscreen-spf-30

  • I like the Neutrogena sprays.  Easy to put on and they don't have much stink.  I tried some of the mineral sun blocks last year and I hated them-greasy and so thick.  I thought they'd be great b/c they didn't have extra perfume but they were just ick.  In the end I would just use whatever you like.  You might hate the doc's favorite.
