I was really bad about taking prenatal vitamins.

and when I say 'really bad' - I mean that I took them maybe thirty times.  maybe.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • I didn't take them either. They bound me up, even the Fred Flintstone ones.

And I ate french fries and ice cream.

But, my kid is a genius.

  • And?
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I get terrible in the third trimester. I think I am averaging two a week. Sorry kiddo.

I can't take them in the morning because they upset my stomach. And then I forget at night.

    lol!

They didn't make me sick, I just forgot to take them a lot of the time. I suck at remembering to take pills.

I do think they're important, but aren't a lot of foods fortified with folic acid, anyway?

  • H pretty much forces them down my throat. So I take them every day.

    H is a very protective Dad-to-Be.

  • I was really good about it first tri, but slacked in 2nd and especially 3rd. I also have spina bifida (a weird form, where I have holesin my back but am mostly asymptomatic) so I was prescribed like a bazillion mg per day. My kid is currently twirling in a circle until she gets dizzy and falls down, so this maynot quite be a ringing endorsement, lol.

I took them like they were magic pills that could prevent all harm to my child, ever. I was a complete nutjob when I was pregnant.

  • Flintstone Gummies was the absolute best I could do (of course when I remembered)

My doctor said they were just as good as pre-natals.  They are pretty flexible at my practice

It's annoying that they are most useful when they are hardest to take (before you know you are pregnant and during the morning sickness months).

This post reminded me yo take mine (to get my folic acid up - I'm not pregnant)

  • I rarely remembered to take them.  I also drank soda and coffee whenever I wanted and I am sure there was lunch meat eaten.  Oh, and I had banana splits from Sonic way too often.

I have one of those Sunday-Saturday pill dispensers on my bedside table, like someone's gramma would use. Seeing that hideous thing each night helps me remember.
  • Mine taste like sour patch kids, so I look forward to taking them every day. Some days it's a struggle not to take them all.

However, I am awful about my iron supplements, which I think might be more important for ME at this stage.

    Woke up. Still queen.
  • I was anal about them, but I have family with spina bifida (severe spina bifida) so I was on a higher dose of folic acid.

This was with Gabe, right? The one you hate? I bet you doubled up on prenatals with Lila! lol

I am too and I need to just man up and take them. I have such issues with pooping already and I just dread taking them on a regular basis.I read somewhere to eat a bowl of regular cheerios each day as they have a huge serving of fortified iron in them. I might do that as it seems to be more gentle on my system.

I had anemia when pregnant and they told me to take the iron supplement Feosol (I think that was the name) because iron constipated me. Totally did the trick, was never constipated again. I'm not sure what's in there, magnesium or a stool softner? I have no idea.

  • I took mine religiously. How could I have lived with myself otherwise, what with my advanced maternal age and everything.

If I could kiss you right now I would. :-) I am going to go look this up.

  • I took one a day of the kind you are supposed to take three times a day. Sometimes I would skip them altogether. They made me feel barfy if I took all three, even after the morning sickness was gone.

Apparently I was eating well enough to make up for it, because my kid checks out normal so far. She's even doing stuff I didn't think she would be doing at this age, like repeating some noises back at me. IMHO she's a fuckinggenius and I'm putting the ivy league on notice so they have 18 years to get ready for her.

I do get judgey with people with McDiets who don't take them, though. Unless ketchup is really a vegetable, people have to do something to nourish their babies while pregnant.

  • this is probably why I'm avoiding picking up my script, prenatals gave me the worst nausea and constipation, I had to change my prenatals 3x until I found one w/the lowest iron I could tolerate when I was pg w/my other 2...I take a multi every day plus an iron supplement so it's not like I'm completely denying myself proper nutrition, I'm looking at you yellowfeather

  • The only time I took vitamins was when I had the picc line in and I could give it to myself that way.   I did religiously shove folic acid down my throat until I was 16 weeks, if Jackson ended up with a neural tube defect and I hadn't taken them then I probably would have never forgiven myself thinking I could have prevented it.

I also didn't really eat much, it's actually quite amazing how well a baby can do when you aren't providing much.
