Any Veterinary Technicians/Technologists?
I'm looking into Veterinary Technician/Technologists programs online, so far I've only found one that offers a bachelor and that's what I'd like to do if possible. I was hoping y'all might have some advice or even personal experience.
I'd like to be able to go to a campus to learn but because H is in the military and we're moving to Alaska within the next year, and they don't have any options I have to look into online options.
I would really appreciate any advice at all, thank y'all!
Re: Any Veterinary Technicians/Technologists?
I won't be too much of a help b/c I never went to school for it, however, I am a vet tech. I started by working as a kennel attendant in a veterinary hospital. I then trained my way up through all aspects of the hospital. If possible i'd try to get a job doing kennel or reception to get your foot in the door. This will enable you to get on the job training as well as determine if its something you really want to do. We have a lot of people come in to train and decide that its not what they want to do. It sounds great on the outside, but reality isn't all puppies and kittens. And the pay scale...not so great.
I looked into going to school a few years after i started but it didnt make much sense since i was already doing it, and going to school would not have gotten me any more money. I actually went to school and go my degree in writing, but after 6 months of working with my degree was bored and went back to the animal hospital world. Its a great job, my hospital is very busy and fast paced, never a dull moment. The pay sucks, but the pet benefits are great
In our area we have two schools for the vet tech program, not sure about your area though. Good luck!
