Bay to Breakers

Anyone done it? Doing it this year?

I'm thinking about it (it would be my first year) but I can't decide if it looks like fun or like a total nightmare, given the supposed craziness, drunkeness, and just the amount of people.

If you've done it before, any tips for a newbie?

Re: Bay to Breakers

  • Do you live in the Bay Area?  I only ask b/c your profile says Chicago---if you aren't already in the area, getting a hotel in SF at this time would be hellaciously expensive and/or inconvenient.

That aside--I have done it twice--once walking to "observe" it all and once running.  It is a lot of fun.  Not too far (I think 8.75 mi?), and a few good hills, but very do-able.

It isn't as crazy as it used to be--they have cracked down quite a bit.  However, it's always a blast.

  • I do live in SF - just moved in January so I haven't been here to see the race before.

Well, in that case, you should for sure do it!  Especially since you live in the City--getting around will be a bit tough--BART/MUNI start early and can take you to the start (best people watching!  watch out for the flying tortillas!) near the Embarcadero...the end at Golden Gate Park is sort of difficult, though--the N Line is the only bus that leaves from there and they are PACKED.  But if you don't have any plans for the day, you can take your time...

Are you thinking of running or walking it?  Either way, for SURE worth doing at least once Big Smile  let me know if you have any specific questions.
