Runners - s/o of workout schedule questions

When you are training for a race, how often do you run/week?

When you are not training, how do you mix up your schedule? Do you run the same number of days per week, but just less mileage?

My races are coming up in a few weeks, & I'm starting to think about what comes next, both in terms of some time off (less running, more of something else that's TBD) & my next race.

Re: Runners - s/o of workout schedule questions

  • I've been running 3 or 4 days/week while training.  I'm really bad with cross training though (as in, I don't do it at all), but if you are cross training I would think you could get away with running 3 days/week.

I'm also really bad with keeping up with running when I don't have a race planned, so I'm trying to keep my schedule full to stay motivated. Ideally, I'd like to think I'd still run at least 3 days a week, but with less mileage.

  • training: 5-6 days/week

not training: I aim for 5, don't beat myself up if I miss a day, do more cross training.

I try to maintain some base mileage in between training cycles so it doesn't hurt so much when it's time to hit it hard again.  The main difference between training and not training for me is the amount of speed work I do.

but sometimes, when I get sick of running, I"ll take a couple of weeks off, run when I feel like it and do more cross training.  eventually I decide that cross training is boring and that I want to run again.

  • I need a schedule. It's like my own personal trainer. I picked a HH spring training to transition between my HM and marathon training which has lots of running with some speedwork and strength training to mix things up.

If I don't have a set schedule I get really lazy and unmotivated, but that's just me.

  • Even if I don't have a specific race in mind I always have goals that I am working on.  Right now I'm not training for a race, but I want to work on improving my 5K time.  If I don't have a goal I am a big slacker.
  • I run 3-4 days a week whether I'm training for a race or not.

I usually just lower my overall mileage when I'm not training.
