Cat dandruff?

Does anyone know any remedies for a cat with lots of dandruff? It's driving me nuts. We've bathed him, brushed him.. nothing helps. I think both of our cats have it but I really notice it on the black one.

We feed the cats a combination of dry and wet food - dry in the AM and wet in the evening

Dry food we've been using is Before Grain. I haven't noticed it any worse since using this bag of food.

wet food - also Before Grain, or Wellness, or occasionally Fancy Feast when we are out of the better stuff and can't get to the store that night.

Any ideas? Do I just need to take him to the vet? It's driving me nuts!

Re: Cat dandruff?

  • same thing with our one black cat... and the vet said ours had dry skin. So 2-3 times a say we wiped him down with a warm wash cloth to help sooth him and brush him every day. Changing of seasons (turning on the furnace to opening windows and such does the same thing to our allergies as it does to a cats skin. And try to get him to take a multivitamin for cats everyday.

Now ... if you bring the cat to the vet there always is a chance it could be a liver/kidney issue. Usually that only occurs in older cats and other things will go wrong with their health too, but this is what the the vet told us could be a last resort if the flakes were to never go away. We also shampooed all the carpets/vaccum more often and made sure ANY place the cat laid had been wiped down and cleaned more often. (window sills, under the bed, couch, corners, their beds, etc.) So if you want, call the vet and ask first, usually they (or a vet tech could tell you if it something they can do besides the home remedies they told us.)

    Good Luck!

  • Thanks! I think I'm going to try just calling the vet today :)

We haven't really had any seasons change (in Texas.. it's just hot and has been for awhile.. in fact, I don't think we ever even used the heat this year! Good call on the multivitamin too. We used to give them to the cats but then just stopped and I forgot about it!

    Thanks!
