Flu-like symptoms after long run?

Let me preface this by saying I am officially on day 1 of my very first ever 1/2 marathon taper, so for the last couple of weeks, I've been at the peak of my training intensity.

My last two big runs, most recently my 12-miler on Saturday, I have literally felt like I got hit by a truck/slapped with the flu. BAD. All day Saturday afternoon and Sunday were awful. I had shooting pains running through my body, a headache, felt feverish, chilled, etc. It was awful.

I paid close attention to my nutrition both before and after my runs, and was definitely hydrated.

I had some pretty intense delayed onset muscle soreness as well like I'd never experienced before.

Even today, 2+ days post-run, I still feel like crap even after sleeping away most of the weekend on the couch because I had no energy.

Has this ever happened to you before?

Re: Flu-like symptoms after long run?

  • This has happened to me in the past.  I usually feel fine after a day or two.
  • I'm actually experiencing this for the first time. I ran a half on Sunday and yesterday I was just sore, but in the afternoon had a stomach ache and felt sick before I went to bed. I woke up today feeling like I'm going to throw up and I can only eat bland or slightly salty foods (like crackers). I don't know whats going on but I'm drinking lots of water to be hydrated. My half was really hot and sunny so I sweated a ton and I'm wondering if I got a little bit chilled because of this.

But I really don't know what causes it.

  • This happened to me after my very first HM, it was horrible. It went away. Drink lot's of fluids (I pounded the Gatorade like crazy) to help flush it out and get your electrolytes back in balance. Feel better!

  • You very well could have a little something. After racing, your body is susceptible to getting sick. You wear yourself down after a race. Lots of info. out there to Google. (I'd post some links if my computer wasn't acting stupid.) It's happened to me before after a big bike race. I'd take an extra day or two off or really easy. Stay well hydrated and get some extra sleep.
